CH134A Programmer - Can't write to BIOS chip

Hi all, unfortunately I haven't been able to find a solution on this for myself. I'm no expert in programming these ICs, so I'm hoping I've missed something embarrassingly obvious!

After screwing up a BIOS setting on an old laptop rendering it unrecoverable I bought a cheap CH134A programmer & test clip. I'm sure everyone knows the ubiquitous sub $5 listing on their favorite import site.

The chip I am trying to write is an Eon EN25F32

I can dump the BIOS fine as far as I know, but I can't seem to erase or write to the chip. AS Programmer in windows won't erase and gives an error: refer to datasheet or try unprotect. The unprotect attempt just hangs and returns all the SREG options as FFFFFFF

Flashrom in verbose mode hangs on

Found Eon flash chip "EN25F32" (4096 kB, SPI).
Reading old flash chip contents... done.
Erasing and writing flash chip... Trying erase function 0... 0x000000-0x000fff:E
I looked through the datasheet but I don't know enough about flash ROM's to actually make good use of the info. I have included it for quick reference if it's helpful.

I have heard some say the supplied cheap cable is no good, but then others say that it's fine for just fixing BIOS' you broke. Thoughts on replacing the test clip cable? I think it is fine as it reads reliably.

Remove it from the board and try again. There are usually components interfering with it when you read it on the board.

That worked a treat and makes a lot of sense really. That being said, I am surprised that I've never seen that mentioned elsewhere, at least not that I can see. There's a lot of videos of people doing similar BIOS recovery onboard

Off board recovery went well and the machine is now fixed and working again, thanks for the suggestion.

        Glad you got it fixed.
I've seen it mentioned a few times, usually whenever there are issues reading on the board as it's always worked before.

Acer e15-e5-576g-5762 bricked. Bios chip won't interface in AsProgrammer.
          by inck243
Thanks for any help. The board version is DAZAARMB6E0 REV: E. The bios chip is winbond 25Q64JVSIQ1736. W25Q64JV is not available in AsProgrammer -- only BV CV FV or FW_1.8c. The chip won't interface with asProgrammer and a CH341A. When I have this chip on the board, the laptop will not post but when I plug it in to power, the blue LED lights up, also the orange when the battery is connected. When I push the power on button, keyboard backlight turns on and the fan starts briefely then turns off. But I can't do anything to program this bios chip so I bought another one.

          The BIOS...

Elitebook 840 G5 Bios Chip Soldering Question
          by Azurain
          Hi everyone,

I have an HP Elitebook 840 G5 that I am trying to get working again. I've removed the front bios chip (the 32mb one) and have run it through HP unlocker already. I've uploaded and verified the new bin, but am now experiencing an issue that has led me to believe I've been soldering the chip back to the motherboard incorrectly.

Essentially, after re-soldering the chip back into its place and reassembling the laptop, the charging light immediately flashes orange and white and then shifts to a solid white. The capslock and numlock lights blink seven times...

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX REV.2 bios chip problems, probably socket shorted?
          by Biessea
          Hi there,

          I'm a technician and a computer/retro computer lover.

I just bought a great Sabertooth motherboard (I really love the colours and the ASUS military scheme) to install a nice FX-8320 from AMD and make a gaming computer with a Geforce GTX 970.

For the first time I had problems with the system, but I solved and then correctly booting, I installed Windows 10 and then I started to overclock the system. I reached a stable configuration of 4,8GHZ with 1,475v.
Then I saved fan configuration, and other parameters, and saved to the overclock profile...
