SAMSUNG LCD 40" does not turn on

    Hi all,
As many of you, I started having issues with my Samsung LCD 40".

The TV set has been working fine for the past 2 years, but since I came back from abroad after 15 days off, I am not able to turn it on anymore.

Upon pressing the on/off switch, the TV makes the clicking noise and the intro song, the screen kinda turns on (but is still black) and no image appears. The on/off led then starts blinking at a rate of 5 blinks/sec and the sound works fine. http://youtu.be/mtYxzxAXroE

I tried to open the TV set to check for popped resistors but apparently everything was fine; anyways, I replaced all (but the small one) capacitors shown in the picture with new ones, to no avail.

Is there something else I can do to bring this TV from the dead? I'm in Australia and Samsung will not fix it because it's an overseas model.

If you guys have any ideas I would really appreciate.

    Cheers

You might need to do an EEPROM reset. Post a picture of the main board.

Re: SAMSUNG LCD 40" does not turn on

        Hi Tom66,
Sorry for the extreme ignorance but which one is the main board? Is it the one with the connectors (RCA, HDMI, etc)?

Moreover, where can I download the firmware from?
And lastly, is it possible to upgrade the EEPROM if the image does not appear? Do I need to follow any on screen information?

        Thanks for the help...

Yeah, the main board has the inputs. You might need to remove the metal shield if it has one.

You do not need to upgrade the firmware. Resetting the EEPROM is done by connecting two pins with your screwdriver while trying to turn the TV on; this causes the TV to re-program the EEPROM from scratch. You will lose any settings you have changed - it will go back to the default factory configuration. When the caps go bad, sometimes it corrupts the EEPROM.

              Hi Tom,
Do you have further instructions as to. What pins need to be shorted?
Any lead will be appreciated since I have a 3 years old crying day and night because she cannot watch Dora the Explorer!

Be very careful about doing anything inside your TV. You have no understanding of what to do or why you are doing it.

Check to see if there is a very large off/on switch inside the TV. If you find it check to see if it is in the "off" position. If you can't find it (and you can't because it's not there) then take your TV to a local TV shop and ask to get it repaired.

TV shops are not the enemy. They also have 3 year old children to feed just like you.

It's a good thing you don't need heart surgery.

The SDA/SCL pins. There are many chips on the board and one of them starts with "24C" which indicates an EEPROM.

                  http://www.tv.quuq.org/forum/index.p...e;topic=1744.0

According to that source it's near the common interface slot. Look for IC 1803 (24C256). Pin 5/6 should be shorted while relay is clicking. Then unplug TV and plug it in again. On the remote press info, menu, mute, one after another, go to Factory Reset on the menu and you should be back to a TV that behaves new out of the box, you will need to retune it and tweak it as desired of course.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my LE40R86BD, after changing the bad cap, I pressed the power switch on the TV panel & plugged the power, hold the switch for 2 minutes and the TV will be ON....hope this work...

Now I have another problem, my D Menu is " not available" can some one help?

Does switching to Movie mode change the screen to a swirly mess of green colours? If so you might need to do a factory reset.

                        Hi there,
With all due respect, this sort of answer does not help anyone.
I have already re soldered new capacitors, and all I want to test now is to reset the EEPROM as suggested by our colleague. If it doesn't work I will surely take it to the TV repair shop.
As for my background, I am computer science graduated and whilst not a technician as I presume you are, I have a good idea what an EEPROM is for.

Now, back to the topic, if someone can just give me the lead as to how to reset the EEPROM it would be appreciated.

                        Cheers

Jeez, shorting two pins of an EEPROM is not going to kill anyone; the voltages there are of the order of 5V.

I do hope you are taking precautions with the primary side of the power supply. Basically, it's a good rule not to touch *any* part of the power supply while plugged in, whether in standby or not (and you can't always be certain parts are not on the primary side by a brief look) - aside from plasma TVs this will save you from nasty shocks 99.97% of the time. I hope you have an RCD/GFCI in your house and you have tested it, as this will reduce the chance of electrocution.

I've touched the primary side. It's not pleasant but I'm still here. Heh.

TV technicians are expensive, and in my experience many do not have a clue. They are board swappers. They will sell you a new main board for £150 plus £100 to install it. You could get a new 40" 1080p for £300!

Look carefully across the board for the IC1803. It might be near the CI slot, as suggested by one poster, but it's usually near a big processor.

It's very satisfying when you switch the set on and are greeted with a working picture. Almost addictive!

I am having a similar problem with my LCD Samsung TV. I had the exact same problem with my tv light blinking red extremely quickly except I can see white noise on the screen and can change the volume and channels up and down but cannot access any menus or use the touch pad control on the tv itself.

Can EEPROM reset be done with main board removed from TV by applying 5V to pins 5 and 6 or must it be installed in TV and turned on?
