Soldering of components with tiny space

I was wondering, how on earth can the SMD components that are on one of my old school HDDs get soldered! They look phenomenally tiny and it looks impossible to solder without getting solder bridges! Looks like you need to heat the PCB then stick the chips on!

The tinyness was killing my eyes!

The HDD I was looking at, is a Quantum ProDrive LPS 162 MB HDD, probably from the early 1990s.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

I was just watching one of the SMD soldering videos, before looking at the PCB, for the fun of it.

And looks like I need a magnifying glass!

a screen printer apply's the solder paste,
a mixture of powdered solder & flux.

then a robot puts all the bits on,

the the board passes through an oven filled with hot gas or with InfraRed heaters,

then the board goes through a washer to remove the flux.

then a small asian child fits it to the mechanical assembly.

Check Youtube for "How It's Made: Circuit Boards"

Then feast your squinties on pick-n-place machines.
