    well, moust people only need pci-e and sata these days... for the serial thing, keep a spare box with serial (iirc multiple cores= no usb to serial adapter)... for floppies, use a usb floppy drive.

      for surfing the internet a x3 is a lot. lol you can get away with a $19 sempron. serial is important, very, especially if you've ever been in a lab. i still use PCI. audio interfaces, some fantastic NICs, etc still use PCI. tv tuners too. not everything is PCI-E, and most of my hard drives are IDE. but i do have an am3 athlonII so i guess that's somewhat recent, and a AMD 770 chipset board.
