            Hi Phaihn

There are a couple of ways to legally re-install Windows XP on that machine.

Assuming that the machine will boot and ask for a system disk and that the original XP Home Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is still attached AND the machine has its original BIOS with the SLP information intact:

1- Use either an original Restore CD or an original hard drive repair partition. This method does not require entering a CD-Key as the original disk uses "System-Locked Pre-Activation" (SLP) which checks to see if the BIOS matches the install disk.
here's one vendor of Restore CDs: http://restorecd4u.com/index.php

2- Use an "OEM" XP Installation disk and use the CD Key on the machine's COA. The installer doesn't always accept these CD Keys, but usually does. You will probably have to call Microsoft during the Activation Process if you choose this method. This method must be used if the machine does not have the original BIOS or motherboard.

There are also any number of questionably legal and outright illegal methods to install XP but it's best to stick to the legal ones as the machine is already licensed to use XP.

OH! do NOT post a picture of the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity without first making the CD Key illegible using Photoshop or somesuch. It's practically guaranteed that someone else will snag the number and activate it with MS before you do. (MS only allows one unique computer to use each number)

            Have Fun,
            Keri

As you can see it didn't come with a key but i got a different one but i think i would rather use a different board in this case but without the plate for the motherboard there are no standoffs to mount it on.

                Hi Phaihn

If someone else snagged the COA, M$'s stand is that you must purchase a new one. The cheapest way to do so is with the "System Builders kit" or OEM version.

If you obtained one another way, they may or may not allow you to activate it.

The Restore CD is keyed to the specific model's BIOS, so if you intend to replace the board, don't bother getting the original CD. Just get the OEM System Builder disk which comes with a COA.

Using the original board and Restore CD is the tidiest method. No fooling around with M$'s "Activation" Scheme. (M$'s Activation nonsense helped drive me to Mac)

                Have fun,

i only have one CPU between the 2 systems anyway i just wanted to see how well this thing worked.

Re: Needs help with HP Compaq d530 cmt

could you please downsize your images? you are making things too wide. try to stick to 700p max width.

why must you upgrade? the bios takes abit of time to get used to, but that is no reason to switch mobos.

besides, most times the fron panel wires (hdd light, pwr light/sw) are in a block and will not usually fit the pin layout of another moldel motherboard. sometimes you can separate them into seperate plugs but that that is a pain. the screw hole layout should not be maddedas you could

                        - short the mobo

-break the mobo due to lack of support or cramming it where it doesnt fit

-break other things as it might not fit.

                        - mess up the cooling system

are you sure there is no code?
it should look like one of these:

again i see no reason to switch mobos

if you must, then find a good, not flimsy case (see https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...e+buying+tips). trying to shoehorn mobos into oem cases they dont fit is a bad idea.

dont try that. that will come to bite you in the ass. they know you are lying and you will fail. if you dont like how this system works, then try ubuntu linux. completely free, faster, more secure, less viruses, tons of free, well designed software, almost all hardware supported. if you dont like something dont use it

First, in the bios, make sure the boot order has the cd drive first, have a known good cd drive, make sure your cd is in good condition, make sure your jumpers for your drives are right, on the right connectors on the cable, and make sure your hard drive is good.

The connectors for the front usb and sound looks like the standard, non-proprietary connectors

                                      http://www.ixbt.com/power/psu/photos...sutest_018.jpg,

is that what the front usb connector looks like?
