Nothing has really changed.... You should always have a backup to fall back on. The only difference here is it should be an OS+Data backup, rather than a Data only backup. Frankly, it should be just like any other NT upgrade. Backup the OS and Data, disconnect any extra drives, update, reinstall the hardware, done.

Ive been running rolling release OSes for years now (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed) and ive had it blow up before, of course. Nothing to the extent that M$ is managing. But these are the growing pains of rolling release software....
