    Fujitsu RECALL!?!

I was pretty proud of myself for ressurecting my aging computer only to have the MBR get corrupted whenever another device was attached. Unfortunately, if I can't attach devices, the PC is useless for what it's needed for.

The thing started getting slower and slower and I realized the HDD was failing. No noises or anything, just slow performance then it would "disappear" from the system.

I had this happen once on a new computer and it was a loose cable so I disconnected and reconnected all cables to the drive, wiped the drive, formatted, ran the manufacturer's disk utility from DOS, reinstalled XP, ran Scandisk, Defrag, installed apps, etc....only to get another blue screen later in the day.

Then I found this bunch of BS! :
    Fujitsu Disaster!

Anyway, a new HDD is installed from a different manufacturer. This machine was definitely cursed or something. It's a wonder it's worked as long as it has!

New caps...check! New HDD...check! What will fail next? Hopefully, nothing!!!!

    Re: Fujitsu RECALL!?!

I've always had remarkable luck with fujitsu SCSI drives. The MAN and MAP series are bulletproof, I have some that are 10yrs old still cranking along.

      Re: Fujitsu RECALL!?!

It appears that only certain Fujitsu drives were affected by bad epoxy on the circuit board causing a short circuit after prolonged use. My drive fit all the symptoms listed on the 'net including simply "disappearing" from the system.

I've actually got 2 older Fujitsu drives and both of them are from the bad batches. Both of the suckers are faulty, too.....and I was wondering why that Fujitsu Windows diagnostic wouldn't run!

Just bad luck. I hope that junk didn't mess up my freshly recapped board, too!

Blaaagh! Cirrus logic chips of any kind is slooow, crude chipsets and easy to blow.

And never very well designed. And can't fiddle with bios settings on cirrus logic chipset mainboards and SLOW. Hard drives with this chip never played nice with any other drives even cirrus logic equipped hard drive. And last nail in CL's coffin was fujitsu's MPG series (they used cirrus logic chip on these).

Cirrus logic did make video chipsets as well. Deadly slow too.

When I replaced any of these, I get speed and compatiblity back so I left cirrus logic behind in 1994 onwards.

If conner did not use cirrus logic chips the Conner would had survived longer and very quick as quantum and other makers if they used their inhouse design or decent ATA chipset back then.

S3 and Tnesg were slightly expensive than cirrus logic video cards but seriously stomped cirrus logic on performance then 3Dfx came by and gave world glorious treat with their stuff.3Dfx's because Doom 3 can be run well with V6000 voodoo video card around 40fps with barton 3000+. But V6000
had much issues and things dragged on too long that dec 2000 rolled around and other video makers outpacing 3Dfx's (ATi and Nvidia). That was the reason 3Dfx shuttered their company and Nvidia bought out the IP.

        Cheers, Wizard

          Thanks for the info, Wizard.

Cirrus Logic=crap. I agree. I've now wasted probably a month trying to get a cirrus logic/fujitsu drive to work reliably, only to find they're all pretty much defective junk.

I remember the relatively brief period of 3dfx cards. One of my favorite games, M1 Tank Platoon 2 was optimized for that card. Actually the only way to have 3d accelleration is with a 3dfx card....I guess you can get a "wrapper" for 3dfx nowadays but I don't quite get how that works. ok, ok, I admit, I haven't tried that hard.

I bought a voodoo 3dfx card on e-bay a while back but haven't done anything with it because I need to install it into my desktop along with my existing card and use a pass-thru cable. Of course, I do not have one of these special video cables so I kinda got lazy and forgot about the whole M1TP2 3dfx project.

The late 90s - early 2000s were an interesting time in the PC world, that's for sure.

That was a common problem with the "slim" Maxtor HDDs.

The regular sized Maxtors were OK.

I have a Maxtor HDD from 2005 and one from 1999 and they're still going strong!

You only need to worry if the model code of your Maxtor starts with "6E".

            With Fujitsu, I dunno.

              Re: Fujitsu RECALL!?!

Since I've become aware of the Fujitsu recall, the Maxtor 6e Model problems and all the other HDD problems mentioned here, I'm going to start aggressively testing these things for reliability after buying a new one.

That Hitachi test seems like it's giving it a workout and can be run for days. I think I'll sic that on any new one I get. If it makes it through 48 hrs....it lives.

A car stereo installer friend of mine always used to say, "It either jams or DIES!", when referring to amps & speakers. Same concept!

RJARRRPCGP, by the way....how many passes or how much time is considered "Prime 95 Stable"?

Here's what I'm considering "stable" from now on:

              memtest 24 hours or more
              Intelburntest / Linpack 400 passes
Prime95 24 hours blend, 24 hours small FFT, 24 hours in place FFT
Hitachi Drive Fitness Test: 200 passes = 4 days running depending on HDD size.

If it passes all that, I consider it stable.

For Prime95, I would try 24 hours. Or at least 12 hours.

I had two Fujitsu 10 drives in a 486 class PC way back when. I don't remember their size but they were big dives for the time as I remember. Those drives died within two weeks of each other! They just disappeared from "system." The suckers didn't even leave me a note to let me know where they were going ether. I wonder if my drives were on this junk list? I have been on the New Western Digital drives for the past few years with no problems. Did Maxtor Drives for a short time but they turned out to be turds.

they were probably from the bad batch.did many data recovery jobs on those.and also the slimline maxtors with firmware corruption.
the scsi fujitsu drives are bulletproof.had 2 in for data recovery where a power supply overshoot blew them up.thought sure i would have to do the headstack swap along with the board due to destroyed preamps but board and eeprom swap got a 100% image recovery.
the boards on both were badly burned up.
