    Inspiron 3200 fan issue.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3200 laptop which I am also currently using to type this. I bought it at a bargain price mid way through last year and I have used it nearly everyday to do homework or access the internet.
Only one think I have noticed since the day I bought it is that the CPU fan has never ever spun!. It only spins up during the POST checks and that's it.... apart from then it never ever spins, even when my laptop is boiling hot. I've never seen my laptop do a random shutdown, but this laptop is usually on for about 4-6 hours a day without an issue.
Is my fan faulty? I have a feeling that it should run to cool down the CPU when hot??

    Thanks.

    Re: Inspiron 3200 fan issue.

have you tried Speedfan (or similar tools)?
the fan should be fine if it spins up at boot.
some circuits however don't use the fan's tach line for feedback (if it has one in the first place) and can be way off.
if controlling the fan speed via SW is possible, you can easily set it as you like. a few tools even allow you to set different trip points for speed control.

      Re: Inspiron 3200 fan issue.

I'm as worried as you: that's not normal, because the Pentium 2 has no voltage or frequency change so it's always at full speed. It should heat.
Check its heatsink: it may be clogged by dust or even worse, as happened in mine.

        Re: Inspiron 3200 fan issue.

I got some inspiration from Zandrax's thread about cleaning heatsinks so I decided to give my Inspiron 3200 laptop an opening up as well. I had a look inside and there was practically no dust in there anywhere. The thermal paste was kinda dry so I scrapped it off and cleaned the surfaces nicely with some isopropyl alcohol. I reapplied high quality Arctic silver ceramique thermal paste and for some strange reason the fan is now working when the laptop is hot.

I attached some pics of the internals of the laptop.

        Thanks.

          Glad to be useful.
Notice the contrast between the big heatsink and the small 40 mm fan: Dell pushed more on passive dissipation than active one.

Dell Inspiron 3542 (Cedar_Intel-MB 13269-1) - RTC battery self-discharging and Realtek LAN issue
            by danielsak
Hello, I have issue with Dell Inspiron 3542.

            Motherboard marking:
            Code:
            Cedar_Intel-MB 13269-1
            PWB FX3MC REV: A00
The laptop works just fine (on battery and power supply) and doesn't cause any problems, except those described below:
            1. The first problem is that the RTC/CMOS battery self-discharges after about 2-3 weeks after installing a new battery. I have been installing different batteries (GP, Duracell, Energizer) and the problem still exist.
            1. The second problem is the LAN network card (Realtek RTL8106E), which is not detected at all in Windows. The BIOS is

Dell Inspiron 3480 All in One corrupt Bios issue
            by computerbacon79
The Dell Inspiron 3480 I own (the all in one, not the laptop) is not wanting to turn on at all. It goes right to a dell logo, but it stays there forever with no other information on the screen. Holding the automatic Bios repair key combo (ctrl+esc) that should let it read a recovery file off a USB drive gets stuck on a black screen and does nothing. No amount of resetting anything so far has worked, and Dell's own support downloads have not really helped. Ive tried another BIN file I found online using my CH341A, and this got me slightly more, that time it displayed a loading bar that never moved...
