WD drives, and to a lesser extent Seagates, have problems with oxidisation at the HDA contacts. If that is your problem, then gentle scrubbing with an eraser should fix it.

is it feasable to coat the pcb (on both sides) esp the solder joints/points (except the head, motor contacts, sata and power connectors) with vaseline to protect the board from oxidisation? will it work?
