HP Elitebook 2540p, missing parts. Need advice.

    Hi all

I just got an HP Elitebook 2540p. I was told that the 1.8" HDD would
be missing, so I thought that it would be a pretty good and sturdy
laptop for the price of the HDD.

When I open up the computer, it looks like the ram is missing too?
(please see attached image). Or is there maybe some kind of SMD
ram in another place, and the port on the image is only for extra ram?

    (probably not )

I'm not very into laptops, so any advice would be welcome!

    Thanks!

That's a DDR3 slot. The other is on the otherside of the motherboard.

So it is not missing the ram?

You'll need to check the other side to see if it has any fitted.

          Wow, thanks for the link!

Am I correct in assuming that if it only needs the HDD, then it is worth
the money? Even though it is from 2010?

^I have spent more on older stuff, so yes, it's worth it. I suggest getting an SSD since it's 1.8"... 1.8" HDDs are slow and troublesome.

Okay, that sounds like good advice. Any special one? I don't need a lot of space,
              would rather go cheaper

If this isn't a "daily driver" so to speak, then sure, go cheap, as long as it fits and has the right interface (if it's a 2010 model, then probably SATA?). I can't speak for SATA 1.8" SSDs, but I spent about $60 for a 64GB 1.8" ZIF (PATA) unit for an old sony of mine... that was a low end SSD too.

                  Yes, it's SATA.

                  On this link:
                  http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/p...r_na-c02206692

                  I read this:

NOTE: * Requires 1.8 in 250GB 5400 rpm hard drive in 1.8 in hard drive bay.

Of course it doesn't need those exact specs, right? I want to go for 60-80gig

                  Thanks,

                  Nicholas

Sorry to ask again, last time I promise

                      Will this be okay? :

Yes but you will only get SATA 2 speeds.
You will also need one of these if it didn't come with your laptop.

Maybe boot the laptop from a Linux Live CD or USB to check the laptop works before spending money on the SSD ?

Thanks, I just ordered the L-thingy

This seems like a good price:

Yes, a good price. I'd still check the laptop works before spending money though.

Yes, I did connect power and got to the 'something is wrong' text.

Also, it is stated as working - from my wifes company. They removed the HDD
                              in order to protect data.

Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

You might not need a 1.8" HDD/SSD. Sometimes they leave enough room for a regular 2.5" drive.
