      I did see that already. It doesn't say whether having DCO Revision: 0x0001 means you HAVE it but I assume it does ?? Strangely it doesn't tell you how to get rid of it if you do.

        hdparm --dco-restore /dev/sdX is what removes this. this one should work over USB.

              i would issue hdparm --dco-restore /dev/sdX just because AAM can reduce the speed of the drive significantly. (but does make it quieter)

                  yes. dco commands are on the minimal list of commands required for operation. it wont damage if it does error anyway.

                      yes, the output of hdparm -I and smartctl -ax would be helpful. it should give me all the info on the drive minus pictures of the dust
