    Website building....

    Hello Everyone,

I have a friend that is looking for some website building software, so I am looking for some website building software that has good features and also easy to use.... open source is what I am aiming for.

I don't know much about website building, so I need some advice from here.
Last time I made a website, I used Microsoft frontpage and it was all in plain text.... my friend instead wants to make a website with graphics and flash animations etc.

    Thanks.

    Re: Website building....

personally i could not work without dreamweaver (and notepad) and photoshop

dunno about nvu or kompozer http://www.nvu.com/
for flash you could start here http://osflash.org/
    need http://www.gimp.org/ also

could also start with a free template and mod it....google open source web templates.

i thought static web design was left for us old farts, all you young guys using drupal or joomla instead?

tip: use flash sparsely. do not under any circumstance make a 100% flash site

      Re: Website building....

if you wanted to do it in text all you needed stevo was notepad and know how to write HTML (ok yeah ita all changed a bit since then)

Microsoft frontpage is suppose to be a WYSIWYG (well almost) webpage/ site designer So not sure how you ended up at text?
(unless your are talking about the text you type into make the page...frontpage does the html formatting of it)

I have used it and it was not considered a "REAL" web page designers program
(they were into things Like Dreamweaver)

It did want I wanted to do mostly with some HTML hacking. so I wasn't complaining

I think Firefox has a basic page builder in it not sure on that, maybe IE too?

Today I dont know whats out there as freebies software wise
but if they know nothing of web design then check out these sites
you may find some links there for freeware HTML builders

      http://www.htmlgoodies.com/

      http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmas...leditors.shtml

You will probably find you may need more then one package as far as freebies are concerned....like a flash program html editor
when you look at webpages today they are far from what they use to be

I am sure there are some web site builders around here so I expect you get better help from them on this...
I haven't done a page in years and its all changed with the use of java flash CSS etc.

hope its of some help anyway

      Cheers

        joomla

        http://www.joomla.org/

Thanks will thats what I was trying to think of

Dreamweaver was at the time a powerful program but you needed to know how to fly it
and me was too lazy to learn, well I started too...
        http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/
(you got to pay for that one but)

Yeah I hate flash...and totally agree use it sparsely

The quickest way to get someone to leave a site is to have it sitting there loading up megs of pretty graphics....we want the meat not the dressing and we want it NOW

Another thing and guess it still applies is watch out for stuff that works in IE browser but nothing else I still find sites that don't work correctly with firefox
