Strip video, keep audio?

Can anyone recommend good software (Win7/Linux) to strip the video from my dash cam footage, and create an audio file? I'd like to e-mail some pieces of audio to my mother. She has an old car like I do (she has a 2004 Chevrolet 2.2L, I have 2002 Saturn 1.9L). She needs to know what a whining power steering pump sounds like, since older systems often develop leaks, which can lead to damage and accidents. I told her it was whining "like that American professional tennis brat John MacInroe from 45 years ago", but I was being cheeky. That does not really describe what it sounds like.

What software should I use for this?

Good old FFmpeg should do the trick, you can also use VLC to "convert" the video to an audio file
Audacity if you need to edit audio after extracting it
But I'm not sure if your dashcam mic is that sensitive to engine noises, when Installed on the windshield behind the rear view mirror...

I've opened video files in Audacity and it just extracts the audio.
