    Auto Power-On After Outages: Advice?

I'm looking for ways to ensure that my desktop computer automatically powers on once the power is restored after an outage. I've heard suggestions about shorting the front panel I/O connector on the motherboard or shorting the SMPS 20/24 pin to accomplish this. However, I'm uncertain if these methods are both effective and safe.

the bios should have an option to always power on after ac back or after ac is restored. however, the option can be called by many different names by different motherboard manufacturers and not every board may have such functionality. consult your motherboard manual for more info.

shorting the board's power header wont work. the power header button is a push to on button type, therefore shorting will just cause the board to power on and off repeatedly every several seconds or so.

shorting the green wire to any black wire on the main atx connector can work but short circuit protection is setup differently depending on the psu manufacturer and depending on the model and ic chip used. therefore, in some cases, shorting the green wire *might* cause the short circuit protection to not work and could result in a fire. so i dont recommend it if the computer is going to be left unattended for long hours or unless u are sure and have tested that the short circuit protection requires the ac power to be removed to reset the psu's short circuit protection trip. then it may be ok to short the green wire on the main atx connector if the board's bios lacks the option to always power on after ac is back.

I personally do not recommend doing this even if your computer has this feature because first of all the computer did shut down properly and a lot of times it requires some type of intervention on the user either reboot or continue to load windows which may or might not work correctly your better option would be to use a battery backup and get one big enough for you to safely shutdown your computer when you do not have normal operating power

Could you please explain how to test it?

Most systems will have an option in the BIOS for that (usually listed under "Boot" or "Power" settings), but I agree with Sam's advice on using some sort of uninterruptible power supply as a fallback.

Chromebook USB-C no longer recognized USB devices after shorting
            by theflyingsquirrel
I have a Samsung chromebook Pro and one of the USB-C port have something inside and was shorting. The particular thing look like a loose soldering debris. It was at a bit off middle so I think it was shorting the vbus and data pin. I ended up desoldering the whole usbc port and removed it. Upon removoing the usbc port, the chromebook boot again. I can charge with the remaining usbc port (now I found out that when I charge with higher power charger, it does not work), but I cannot get it to recognize any USB stick I plug in. May be the handshake is gone? In the pictures, you can still see the USBC...

Lenovo G50-80 Auto Power On when AC is detected
            by classicandy
            Hi Everyone,

I have a Lenovo G50-80 that auto powers On when AC (Charger) is connected. I have checked the BIOS settings and there is no option to turn On or Off that feature as it is in some HP EliteBooks. I did update the BIOS and still same.

I then flashed the BIOS with a different bin file I downloaded here, It worked (didn't auto power on) for some time (after testing up to 5 times) but has now started again to auto power on when AC is connected.

The CMOS battery voltage is 3v. I have also tested with two main batteries as well. I would be glad if anyone...

            Mosfet Advice
            by Green Probe
Hi, Im looking to replace some EMP21N03 mosfets on an Alienware motherboard, but I'm having trouble finding a legit supplier. The ones that are available from China have pictures with the engraved logo looking very scratchy and sketchy. Nobody in the US sells them. I'm trying to find a compatible mosfet, but I'm not well versed enough to be confident im making the right choice. Does anyone have a suggestion or advice that could help me find the right mosfet? Thanks!
