There are many revisions of the AGP spec
Some boards can be plugged into slots that will cause damage, it is not fool proof...
There have been 3.3v 1.5v and 0.8v slots (agp 2x, 4x & 8x)
Then there is AGP pro that is larger with more power available (up to 75w if I'm not mistaken)
So might just be you tried it in an incompatible slot...
