If you are new to Linux, don't use Debian. Debian tries to be "pure Linux', whatever that is.

Use Ubuntu or it's off-shoot, Linux Mint. And, Ubuntu is actually an off-shoot of Debian. But it is easier to use.

Anyway, use the NetworkManager GUI to do the wireless configuration.

OK, I now see, you are using the NetworkManager GUI.

SSID: The name of the Access Point you want to connect to.

      Mode: Infrastructure

      BSSID: (blank)

Device MAC address: This is auto detected.

      Cloned MAC address: (blank)

      MTU: automatic

Then under the "Wireless Security" tab:

Security: Whatever your Access Point is configured to use, usually this is automatic.

Password: Do I really need to explain this?

But first, when you click on the network connection icon in the taskbar, it should give you a list of available access points. If not, make sure the wireless option says "On".

If you don't show a wireless option, then you don't have the needed drivers installed. If they are not open source drivers, Debian won't have them. This is the main reason most people become frustrated when using Debian.

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection

You must mean ipw2200. You will need to download the firmware and place it in the /lib/firmware folder (as root).

            See this:
            http://wiki.debian.org/ipw2200

To see what firmware it is looking for, enter this command in the terminal:

            Code:
            dmesg | grep firmware

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection

Just download one of the compressed firmware pakages from here:

              http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/un...table/current/

Put it on drive and copy it over to your Debian machine, in your home folder. Then, you should be able to just right-click on it and select "Extract". Then enter these commands:

              Code:
              cd firmware
              Code:
              sudo dpkg -i *.deb
That will install all of the "proprietary" firmware file packages that are in that download. You may then need to reboot for everything to work.

              EDIT:
It may error instead, because I see some non i386 files in there. Then just install the one you need:

              Code:
              sudo dpkg -i firmware-ipw2x00_0.36+wheezy.1_all.deb
Hint: Type in the first few words (firmware-ipw), then use the Tab key for auto-completion.

Thanks guys now is too late to try those parameters cause went back to WinXP and had a hard time to reinstall win xp sp2 i guess this old Sony vaio is not even suitable for this Linux distros i tried lubuntu and it also at boot asked me for "Pio" or some like that.
well i gave it a try and learned some stuff.installing, uninstalling software ,but sometimes you can´t beat the old machine. At least i made a few distros ISOS on Cd for future testing.I also ended up swapping Ubuntu 12.04 for Mint14 KDE on other Pc.

It is an ASCII character, commonly called a "verticle bar":

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_bar

In Linux and Unix, it is used to "pipe" one command into another. In this case, it pipes the output of the command dmesg into the input of the command grep.

Whats wrong with Linux Mint? It is based on Debian, but it has a lot more extras added to it. The extras make Linux Mint a much more usable version of Linux

Re: help on linux disro and wireless connection

Debian may not use sudo. Then you will have to enter the root password. You were asked for one upon installation, do you remember it?

It is possible it is the same password, so you then gain root permissions by entering the su command (superuser):

                          Code:
                          ~ $ su
                          Password:
When you enter the password, it will remain blank. Then enter the other command without the sudo prefix:

                          Code:
                          dpkg -i firmware-ipw2x00_0.36+wheezy.1_all.deb

Follow my original instructions. Isn't the firmware package in a folder named 'firmware'? You then need to move the terminal to that folder:

                              Code:
                              cd firmware

You don't "drag 'n drop" things to a terminal!!

                                    http://www.mediacollege.com/linux/command/cd.html

                                    cd = change directory.

You should try a version with a less demanding desktop environment. LXDE is considered to be more lightweight, and there is an Ubuntu version:
