Good build for your buck? AMD vs Intel?

I am sure you probably get this from time to time, but I am looking for a nice system to game on for a moderate price.

I work at a small computer repair shop and they are very bias against AMD. I also cannot really afford to buy hardware to test out and would prefer to try it out myself as opposed to reading reviews, but you guys here seem like you would know what I would like to know.

I know AMD is cheaper than intel and the qualm that my coworkers have with AMD is they run too hot and are just not as "fast" as their intel counterparts.

They also generally dislike ASUS products, though the little experience I've had with ASUS has generally been a good one. They say ASUS motherboards are notorious for blowing caps and I believe they do have some stock in their claims since they both have worked at this place for 15 years and both, from my perspective, seem to know an awful lot.

Just on a side note, 99 percent of the computers we work on are brands, i.e. HP, Dell, etc. So I have noticed some things, not really CPU wise, but chipset wise, which is that ATI and Nvidia chipsets of older computers often overheat and need reballed.

With that being said, I was hoping maybe someone could shine some light as to what hardware I could get that is at a median of price and quality and just to hear some of your experiences with AMD cpus. I am not really looking for something really high end. I have thought that maybe getting a refurbished i5 off of geeks.com and perhaps just upgrading the HDD to an SSD and getting a decent video card. Which leads me to another question. the Geforce GTX series vs AMD Radeon and what would be a good choice that meets lower price and quality.

AMD and Intel both had periods when the processors from a company were faster than the other company's processors.

Nowadays, Intel's processors are faster and use less power but when it comes to performance per dollar you spend for the hardware, AMD is at the top.

AMD's processors use a bit more power, are a bit hotter, but the coolers they come with are good enough that you won't have problems.

I personally only used Asrock and Asus motherboards, none had issues. Years ago, My university roommate worked at at a computer store in this relatively large town and the only manufacturer they had issues with was ECS.

As for what system to build, it really depends on the budget and what you want the system for.

I guess $400-$600 dollars is what I'd like to spend. Because of price I was leaning towards AMD. I want something pretty much just for gaming for, say, Skyrim and virtualization. I tinker around with VMWare so I can try out different operating systems and nostalgia with DOS and Windows 3.1. I am a graduate of Pittsburgh Technical Institute with a concentration in Network Administration so I like to mess around with Server and would like to try out different Linux distros. I still work at a small computer repair store but would like to be significantly more familiar with Server and Linux and their respective corporate programs so I am not one of those people in IT who are idiots when I feel I am ready to get a corporate job, though I know I will start out at help desk more than likely.

You will have no problems gaming on an amd. Only choose intel if you are doing lots of video rendering which uses alot of cpu power.

If you want to have a good Linux experience, then you must use nVidia for video. AMD's Linux drivers are crap.

At 400-500$ I would go for this:

            140$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819113286 AMD FX-6300
            75$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157280 GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
            35$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145263

            and you're at 250$.

At video cards, at that budget I would go for a 7750 or a 7770 Ghz edition.. not much of a difference in price

            99$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161403

            120$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150598 xfx 777 ghz
            120$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102967 sapphire ghz

            ssd, i would recommend

            90$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147163 Samsung 830 128 GB :

            119$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148448

Yes, but he has expressed an interest in learning and using Linux. These are all AMD video cards, and not viable as a Linux card. They will work, but not very well.

I would get an Ivy Bridge chip, maybe a 3220. It'd use hardly any power

Well, the equivalents from nVidia would be

550 ti, a bit weaker than 7750 but close enough:

                  100$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125410
                  105$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130625

560ti would be faster than 7770, more closer to a 7850 .. but the price is also much higher

                  210$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130604

                    According to this news release:

                    http://www.marketwatch.com/story/nvi...ing-2012-11-06

The latest drivers support the GTX600 GPUs. I thought I saw some for around $130 at Newegg, but I gotta go, no time to check.
