Old slot 1 pentium 2, What to do with it.

Just been given an old pentium 2 266mhz Compaq Deskpro.

Is this too fast for mame stuff, old emus and stuff? It also has an Ati 3D Rage pro turbo AGP GPU.

It has A massive 128mb sdram.

    10GB HDD.

And a kitten? <<Not sure if that came as standard in these?

That's the deluxe edition! Those are the only deskpros to come bundled with a free kitten

If it works, it may do nicely for MAME emulation, The 3D Rage video chipset was a beast in it's day. I have a handful of these cards around.

EDIT: I just had to do this. lol

        Oh well, doesn't work.

HDD led just flashes away, but the strange thing is when i remove the cpu the hdd spins up and it sounds like its starting up? Put the cpu back in and its quiet with the hdd led flashing constantly. Must be a dead cpu.

Without CPU, the motherboard won't start, so the controller doesn't inhibit the hard drive from starting up through ATA commands.

Don't rush so fast to decide the cpu is a problem, the video card might be faulty...

Dont have any slot 1 cpus, not seen one for about 10 years lol.

I have another agp, but i'm not taking it out of the htpc. I will take the rage out and see if it comes on. No onboard vga though.

Nope, no difference with the card removed.

Could it be that it has been sat for years in an old warehouse type of place, lots of dust on mobo, perhaps clean in the sink?

Reseat the RAM, remove battery (it's probably been dead for over 10 years!), power on without any drives connected, drag out another power supply for a test... Does the PC speaker beep at all?

Plenty of things to test before you quit and give it the Photonic treatment! "Disappointed! Where's my hammer?"

PhotonicInduction, what a great guy, love watching his vids.

                    No beeps whatsoever.

Reseated all ram, believe it all not my dmm says the battery is fine lol.

Dont have a spare psu, but i opened this one up and nothing looks bad.

Tried all you have said but it just wont boot.

Ram is receiving power, so is the rage.

CD drive opens and closes when the cpu is pulled out, but wont respond when the cpu is plugged back in.

Related to this, I scored an older IBM Aptiva (233MHz K6 CPU) That does work, but the Windows install (Windows ME, go figure on this) is hosed. Does work to some extent though

Cram it into a tight enclosure and turn it into a CD/Media player.

No way to put it in a small enclosure, even the mother board is massive, with another board slotted horizontal into it which has the atx connector plugged into it.

                            Its a tank.

May get the wd40 and toothbrush out

test on monitor soon see if I have video.

Nope, still a no go, washed all the board and its made no difference.

Tried different psu and gpu but still wont start.

Will replace the 6 cpu caps next. Are they critical? As in uf has to be spot on?

I will change caps before buying CPU.

It has been sat in a dairy warehouse for over 5 years so hopefully just the caps have died through age and the cold.

Cpu gets warm, tested all around the board and there is power going around it.

Is it worth changing the caps on cpu?
