Pentium D vs. Pentium Dual Core

First off, I'm a bit under the influence of vodka and what not from tonight's party so please excuse any errors I may make in the following post.

I bought a Shuttle K48 bare bone today... listed as "dead". It arrived in the post this morning so I inspected it and there were no bad caps (all KZG caps), so I decided to pop in a Pentium Dual Core E2180 CPU from my current desktop to see if it would turn on or not... and it did. No problems at all, looks like a good score for $40!

Anyway, I popped in a spare Intel P4 631 CPU into my desktop system (Intel DP965LT board) and it doesn't boot or anything. The 631 P4 came from a dead system. I assumed the board was dead and stripped it for caps... guess I'm wrong... it's the CPU that's dead now that I tested it on a working board!

So we'll scrap the idea of using a P4 in my desktop office system then. So I have two choices thanks to eBay....

    For $25, I can get a E2140 1.6GHz Pentium Dual Core CPU (1MB L2 cache)
    For $17, I can get a 820 2.8GHz Pentium D CPU (2MB L2 cache)
    Also for $17, I can get a 2.8GHz Pentium D 915 CPU (4MB L2 cache)

There's a difference of $7. I assume the $25 CPU is better maybe? Even though it is a lower clock speed but based on the Core architecture...?

Too bad you're in AU... I still have this - https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8821

It's no longer sealed in box, because I used it for testing a board. I'd part with it for $25+shipping at this point. Don't know how that'd work shipping to you, though... I've kept my sales inside the US up to now.
    Ludicrous gibs!

much better deal than any of the ones listed in the first post:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380414227062

      Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHz (2MB L2)

If the board (whichever you drop it into) supports some form of overclocking, this could get interesting, as my E4300 (1.8GHz) easily reached 3GHz
Even with a crappy ASRock board (no OC functions apart from FSB setting), it still managed 2.4GHz (600MHz more by FSB with everything else on stock settings)

I'm actually on a very tight budget. I have to actually fit CPU+RAM into $40-50. I have a few C2D systems around the house so I understand what you mean and they are very good performers... but it's the $$$ I'm a bit concerned about here. Back of my head is saying go with the Pentium dual core because it's newer, but the other half says go Pentium D and save the $7 for food.

I only bothered to post the celeron because of the shuttle thingie.
As in: main sys -> your Pentium Dualcore, Shuttle -> Celeron Dualcore.

or this one if you don't mind a classic auction

Oh, thanks for the auction link! I LOVE auctions I'll try my best to see if I'll win that E2180

and... LOL at the P4 link, it'll turn my shuttle into a fireball instead HAHA. Wait... it doesn't even support a P4 CPU! :P

Re: Pentium D vs. Pentium Dual Core

The board supports pretty much all the Exxxx core 2 duo processors: http://us.shuttle.com/barebone/Models/k48.html

You have the family here: http://ark.intel.com/products/family/26547
Click on one that's supported by the motherboard, then click on ORDERING / SSPECS / STEPPINGS and you have there the cpu code ("SLA95" for example)

Enter that in eBay and you might get lucky to find one cheap - I see E4300 and E4400 for about 5 pounds on ebay UK and they're about 15 pounds (25 dollars) on "buy it now".

SHIT. oops... error by me then.

Completely confused everyone there. I am looking for a CPU for my office desktop... the Intel DP965LT board, not the shuttle. The shuttle already has an E2180 CPU in it (stolen from the desktop). I'm not going to pull the shuttle apart again... it was a bitch to put together again before!

Clearly out of my mind when I'm under the influence of alcohol! I know it's been 3 hours since my last drink but my head still feels like someone stepped on it! :S

Pentium Dual Cores will pwn a Pentium D 9xx series and would generate less heat. Remember, PDC's are based on the C2D Cores while Pentium D are netbrust based and are basically two two p4 cores combined.

                  Early review of them: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...-e2160_13.html

This is the only review I've seen so far to feature a head to head comparison between PDC and PD.

Alrighty! Managed to win the E2180 that Scenic specified above in the auction. $17.89 + $5 shipping... Lets see how this one turns out
