    Do you have 64bit or 32bit Vista installed. The reason I ask is because then you can do an upgrade right to that version of Windows 7.

        Perfect. This is what I would do. Get Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) and upgrade. Make sure you do all your Windows updates on Vista and back up all important data (just in-case) and pop in the disk. Like the others said, 32bit will be less resource intensive and it will work just fine for you because you have less than 4GB of ram. Let us know how it goes.
