    Re: Epic P4 Overclock

Muahaha.... I'm running the P4 at 4.00GHz it works

Well, it works sort of. I can get it to pass POST about 1 in 10 tries, and while the computer runs fine P95 errors out immediately, so I used some stupid online thing to bring up the CPU load so speedstep would go the heck away and took a picture of the 4GHz... (uploading soon)

The voltage is set to 1.400V in the BIOS but I think this motherboard has trouble maintaining that.

I heard that Bloomfield may be the hottest. (First gen Core i7)
      (Especially the i7 920) I think you're lucky to get 4.1 on an i7 920.

80 C at full load is reportedly common with Bloomfield.

Sandy Bridge seems to scale better.
And Ivy Bridge is supposed to be better than Sandy Bridge, but there's been reports of having higher core temps than Sandy Bridge and Intel switching from solder for the IHS contact to paste for the IHS contact.

        Do people still overclock?
        by eccerr0r
Yeah it's free speed, but do people generally still overclock their computers risking instability, using more power/cooling, etc. or have people simply accepted stock speeds or perhaps it's pretty much impossible to overclock in general because CPUs are already at its limits, or perhaps it's not possible without surgery, ridiculous cooling, or signed firmware hacks nowadays?

Wondering if I should run my 2.67GHz C2Q at 3 or 3.2GHz and risk instability or corruption during the summer months as it's nice and cool now during the winter...

        Universal LGA775 VID mod question.
        by Retrorockit
I've been studying the VRD11 Voltage tables for the Core 2 Duo family of CPUs on LGA775. I found a number of settings that involve all VID pins=0 but one.
This could be done playing around with tinfoil to pull them all low, and then tape the desired pin HI to get the desired Voltage range. I call it a range because I intend to adjust it lower as needed with Throttlestop under clocking software.
the advantage of pulling all VID LO would be that you don't need to know the original Voltage of the CPU. Just do the mod and run it.
It has occurred to me that since they will all be...

sse4.1 issue with harpertown xeon lga775 mod
        by ChaosLegionnaire
i ordered a modded lga775 xeon x5470 from china and it arrived last week and i only got to testing it yesterday. i put the cpu in my gigabyte ep35-ds3r motherboard whose chipset can support the cpu.

however, when i fired up cpu-z to check the cpu specs, i noticed that sse4.1 was missing from the list of instructions on the cpu. i attached an image of the problem. i checked wikipedia and it says the harpertown xeons do support sse4.1.

so i wanna ask if this is just a cpu-z display problem or is it a bios/os/microcode issue of using modded lga771 cpus in an lga775 board?...
