even the update procedure on them is pretty much bulletproof.

If thats so how come this one appears pickled? Could it be another problem?

Wow, I made a hot air gun out of a... er...hot air gun and got the SPI bios chip of in a flash. Have ordered a new programmed chip and read up on how to stick t back on. We shall see....

New chip arrives. Line up on pads (fiddly) Dab with the iron across the legs (lovey job as well) set 'er up and plug in.....Wow a beep and it off into post!
Well thats not hard...in fact its bloody easy...then....
SMOKE !...holy shite! lots of it from the bios chip. Out with the power and examination reveals I must have overheated the trace under the SPI and it shorted
Well lesson learnt, but the main one is don't be afraid to rip that dud SPI chip off and replace it. Just don't overdo the heat with the heat gun is all
