    Scanner recommendations

Ok...I need a new scanner. The old HP 6270 just died. I think its something on the PS board. (nope...no bulged caps. ) Since its 6(or so) years old, I think its about time to get an new one. I might still try to repair since there is a certain satisfaction in repair, but I'm going to get a new scanner anyway.

    I'm looking at these two:

    HP 4890
    Epson 4490

Any opinions? I haven't seen many reviews, so I'm divided. I like HP, but from what I've read, the Epson has better optics.

Anyway....my brain hurts from too much research.

    Re: Scanner recommendations

we got a HP 5590 in the office, for a budget document feeder scanner it is great but the auto photo settings are godawful. occasionally the software/scanner crashes and the scanning head starts slapping against the case like a machine gun.

HP also comes with so much software, like they want you to scan their way and then the "corporate" driver which you want doesnt have so many parameters that you might like. There was some kickass text recognition software included with the HP though, i will check tomorrow what it is called.

anyway if i had known the hp was going to be so bad for photos i would have bought a document feeder scanner without flatbed and got a cheap flatbed for photos.

so we bought an epson also. i think it is the 3170 but i will check tomorrow. auto settings are good and the scanner driver is way improved from the old times. you can click auto marquee and it selects the edges of the photo. i like it very much. the cover of the flatbed is pretty flimsy though.

whatever you do dont get a scanner which is powered only via usb like the cheap canons. not only do they have annoying issues but i think they definitely need external powered hub. i was corresponding with a friend to troubleshoot a usb problem with one of those scanners. i am pretty sure it nuked his usb ports.

yeah....I know what you mean about powered USB hubs. Scanners getting power from the USB???? Damn....I knew Canon was cheap, but damn!!!!

I run all powered hubs, just to be on the safe side. The only things I have on an unpowered hub is my scanner (before it died), printer, FF joystick, and a FF steering wheel. All are self powered so they don't pull down the USB bus. All my other things like mouse, card reader, keyboard, webcam, digicam, blah blah blah, are all on powered USB hubs.

........ I need to downsize too many toys......

      ...but damnit.....I'M GONNA WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah they use leds instead of cold cathode. actually both canon and hp make some great enterprise equipment and the canon scanners which have psu are probably as good as epson, i just dont have experience with them.

The canon enterprise document scanners are great though. we have a DR-3020 and ran it 8 hours a day for about 3 years. had one service. cost over $3000 though.

our scanner is epson 3170 photo. i think it cost around $170.

The text recognition software that came with the HP is Readiris Pro 8. awesome.

Hmmmm....I seem to be leaning towards the HP. To date, I haven't had any problems with them. Epson....well....I've been burned by their printers and so have a few friends.

I guess a trip to Best Buy is in order.

I hate to dig up old threads, but.....

so I've replaced the old HP 6270. I figure it is a regulator on the power board. I'm really not interested in repairing it. So my question.....is there anything on this thing that could be used in something else????? If so....anyone interested in this thing. Its about two steps from being just tossed in the trash. I'm in a cleaning mode to possibly make room for a nice big screen TV.
