    Convex top?

Hello, I'm new to this great website!

I have a MSI-5184 motherboard bought in very early 2000, and after 5 years of usage and torture (yeah, frequent usage), the board begins to show its age. Late last year, I tried to install Win XP into the computer, and it keeps doing the BSOD. Previously, it didn't have this problem. I could even run XP on this comp long time ago, but not this time. Only Win 98 can be run properly.

I installed the USB card into the comp too. A nice soundcard also. Well, trying these combinations did not actually cause a conflict, since I've disabled the USB inbuilt in board earlier. Great.

Unfortunately, the system becomes very unstable after several cards installed in the comp. Sometimes, the system fails to boot. Sometimes, the machine keeps forgetting the USB device and make the whole system haywire. Sometimes, it hangs on the BIOS menu. And even worse, it hangs on the Verifying DMI Pool data....

Hang, hang, hang. I thought it was something to do with installing too much devices. I did putting all the cards into another comp similar to my m/b, but it didn't cause ANY problems.

Last week, the comp of mine started acting up again. All the USB are forgotten again. And, it keeps on hanging like it's no tomorrow. I opened it up. I saw caps with convex tops, and I suspect it's all the bad caps. I counted it and got around 7 or 8 of them. What do you think?

    Re: Convex top?

for sure it is the caps. time to take the board out of service and recap it. If you leave it and the board goes completely dead then the board can get damaged.

after recapping all caps 1000uf and above it is likely the board will be completely stable.

please read the faqs and come back with more questions.

That's a known problem, but usually only with OC'ing the processor, because Windows XP makes the system work harder than Windows 98. That's why you can run Windows 98 without a BSOD and Windows XP always gives you a BSOD.
I had that strange problem before, but only when running a game under Windows XP (likely the same with Windows 2000) did I get a BSOD, because of an unstable processor OC. Windows XP can reveal a stability problem when stability problems are not apparent under Windows 98, BUT Prime95 probably can still find a stability problem under Windows 98. Prime95 is an excellent test! It can fail even when the system seems stable!

        LG GRAM random bsod SOLVED
        by alambrose
LG Gram 15Z980 picked up on Ebay for $200 (was sold as parts because no M2 drive and bios pw locked), but otherwise intact and working.

Threw a 500gb M2 in, and was able to install Windows. On Gram, Win activation is stored in the bios, so Windows was automatically activated. I still kept getting random bsod's. Also bought a pw and unlocked the bios.

Upgraded Windows to 11, still didn't solve the random & frequent bsod's. Cleaned & reseated all cables, RAM, etc... still getting frequent bsod's. Bought & installed a new stick of RAM, still getting frequent...

        by the Benninger
HI Folks, I have a problem randomly a BSOD screen appears in the event viewer indicates KernelPower failure, discard the source/memory and SSD, only the battery is in bad condition, it will be possible that the battery is causing this BSOD event , I mention it because the times he gave BSOD he happened to have the battery installed, and last Friday it ran all day without the battery installed and didn't generate any events
At the moment I am checking the mosfets and voltges in general everything seems to be perfect on the main board
