    ASUS RT-N66U Teapo replaced

So, I had more than a couple of ASUS routers die on me (3). I hadn't picked up the flux and iron for years or I might have had the sense to fix them. I decided to try it out BEFORE I had problems with my current router. Replaced a Teapo 470uf 25v A3 series maincap with a Rubycon ZLJ series. The through holes seemed really tight and I had to switch to a small nozzle on the desoldering gun. When I put it back together and plugged it in, nothing happened...for two minutes, no lights, no pop , no nothing. Scared the mess out of me. It finally rebooted and is working. This doesn't void my warranty, right? (LOL)

It's also worthwhile to re-cap the AC adapter. I've done it on quite a few D-Link ones.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Great idea, are they hard to get apart?

        Depends on the style.

D-Link 5V 2.5A adapters need to be pried open with force, but Linksys 12V 1A/500mA grey/black adapters are only held together by ordinary glue and can be pried apart by hand.

I don't know about the Asus ones.

Force? Time to break out the Dremel. Won't come open at all.

Got it open, has a 47uf 400V and 680uf 35v. Both are Taicon, which is supposed to be a reasonably good brand. Might just leave it.

dont worry about the 400v one - mains caps arent stressed.

Very little room in the adapter.

i would not be surprised if there is a small cap on the lower-right under that glue.
there is probably a startup-cap someplace.

I am too lazy to remove all that glue. Used a Rubycon ZLJ and one of the UCC PAG series, which was the only one that actually fit the PCB footprint.Maybe the start-up cap is an SMD on the other side?

Those tiny SMPS adapters are horrible. Run hot, welded shut, no schematics and full of unmarked SMDs.

Give me a linear one any day!

Dig through that glue... It's there.

I would be very surprised if the startup cap isn't under all that shmoo.
                            Cheers!

If there is a start up cap there, it's not a electrolytic can type.
