Replace 25V cap with a 16V in a portable speaker?

Hi!

I posted a thread about identifying caps of my Zoom 9000 guitar effect where I mentioned a JBL speaker I'm trying to help my friend with. I haven't gotten any answers to that thread but I have a question regarding the cap in the speaker, so I thought I'd ask it separately.

The cap is marked 100uf 25V. I have found a set of caps on Amazon that I think will cover the caps of the guitar effekt but it doesn't have any 100uf 25V. It does have a 100uf 16V though. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on this forum that 25V can sometimes be replaced with 16V...but I can't find that thread again.

This is part of the schematic I have found of the speaker.



The cap I'm replacing is C505 on the left side. It has shorted and I'm guessing that that is what blew the U500 chip.

The speaker uses a 19V charger...so I'm guessing a 16V cap is not preferred...but can it work? At least for a while? I don't know if the cap and chip is the only fault in the speaker so I'm trying to keep costs at a minimal until I know for sure.

+v-sys must be atleast 25% less than the cap rating ideally.
so if v-sys is 12v you could get away with 16v caps, but for 19v even 25v caps are pushing it.

So what is +V_SYS? Is that the main power rail? I can see in the schematic that all caps after +V_SYS is rated 25V so I'm guessing that you are right. Bummer...then I have to order that one separately. I have no electronic component shop locally so I'll have to order it...with shipping costs several times the cost of the cap. 😂

i'm assuming v-sys is your 19v psu input

Yes...I think you are right. So I bit the bullet and ordered the cheapest alternative I could find on Amazon...about $10 bucks. Thank you for your input stj. 👍

Next time give electrokit.com a look, they don't have a large offering of caps but their shipping is very cheap and they are based in Sweden.

Thank you Per, I'll remember that. 29 SEK is reasonable for shipping. They did not have the cap I needed though.
