    iMac G5 isight possible bad caps.

    Today I picked up a free G5 iMac (whoo free stuff) which had been lying around a friends shop for a while with what he thought was a dodgy psu which he couldn't be arsed paying for.
    So I took it home and with some trial and error (mostly error) stripped it down to all parts since it needed a bloody good clean.
    The psu looks terrible, but then again it could just be covered in glue, from the big yellow capacitors on the top.

    So I ordered one but after poking around the motherboard some bulging caps caught my eye which didn't look to great.
    So I googled it, as I've never done a stripdown this extensive or had to screw with capacitors, and didn't like what I found.

    I was wanting a 2nd opinion before I get a soldering iron and new caps. Some pictures of all the mobo caps are attached. There are only two faulty as far as I can see. The first 8 pictures contain the faulty ones I can see.

      Yeah KZJ is a bad series from Chemi-con, I would replace all of them even if they aren't bulging. The rest are good caps and don't need to be replaced. Yay free stuff!

          By my count there are:
          4x1500uF 6.3V
          4x1800uF 6.3V
          3x120uf 16V
          4x680uF 16V
          1x1000uf 16V

          Not counting the surface mounts. Only two of the 1500uF caps look bad.
          the caps are rather cheap, but do I really need to replace all of them. Also I shouldn't really need to replace the surface mounted ones should I? None of them look remotely bad.

              I had a look at the PSU which was the first thing thought to be a problem, as I have started thinking whether it was the caps on the logic board instead of anything to do with the PS. But it doesn't look great. I think the large yellow objects are capacitors but they might be inductors instead.

                  First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                  I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                  I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                  Hello!

                  I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                  The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                  Hi,
                  I got this iMac for free, and it was said to me that it has dead logic board.
                  I discovered that the +12VSB came for 3-4 seconds and then disappeared. Hitting the power button for about 20 times, I got it to start up.

                  Even with the logic board disconnected, the 12VSB was pulsing after few seconds. PSU looked nice with no caps blown. I decided to put my ESR meter on few of the dark green Taicon caps.

                  I was shocked that one 100uF 35V read 45 ohms, next to it was a 16V 470uF that read almost 4 ohms. These were on the primary side.

                  Help with switching power supply caps

                  I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
                  I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
