• Re: Imac 614-0378 repair advice

Well, I have discovered that the kettle lead supplying the iMac fused so there may not be lasting damage with the PSU. The strange thing is that I tested the old psu before the new one and it appeared to output the correct voltage on the blue/grey rails but after the short the new one did work (unsurprisingly as I have found out that there was no input voltage) but the old one still outputs the correct voltage.......

Obviously there is something else going on here and I will investigate further. Unfortunately the kettle lead I used...

I found this thread while trying to ascertain the voltages on the out pins of this model psu.

I thought that I would post here since I have exactly the same psu and I foolishly didn't check it's position when I was testing it and a point shorted to earth with a part in the case.

A picture of the damage is attached. I was just wondering if there was any idea on salvaging this psu as it turns out the one it was meant to replace (a celetronix version) is not actually fried as I was told - by a 2 separate people who repair...

• Re: Problem, broken legs.

Got the problem sorted. At the time I didn't understand the suggestion well enough so I used the solder that I have which is about 99% Tin, 1% copper.

But it worked after I left it there for about 2 hours and the holes are now clear of all obstructions, although i'm not too sure about the traces so i'll have to be careful when fitting the new caps.

Thanks again mate.

Is that lead as in metal lead or power lead? Sorry I I'm kind of a soldering noob.

• Problem, broken legs.

I tried to recap the logic board of my 2nd hand iMac. The problem found here
https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26694

So I removed both capacitors following the main FAQ and when I go to clear the holes, I find a snag. One of the two caps came away freely but on the other, it seems that I simply snapped the legs without removing them leaving the holes plugged by each leg. Now I cannot remove them using the sewing needle method. It seems that the soldering iron I have is too weak (only 40W) and I cannot melt the solder enough to push the old legs through...

• Re: iMac G5 isight possible bad caps.

I had a look at the PSU which was the first thing thought to be a problem, as I have started thinking whether it was the caps on the logic board instead of anything to do with the PS. But it doesn't look great. I think the large yellow objects are capacitors but they might be inductors instead....

By my count there are:
4x1500uF 6.3V
4x1800uF 6.3V
3x120uf 16V
4x680uF 16V
1x1000uf 16V

Not counting the surface mounts. Only two of the 1500uF caps look bad.
the caps are rather cheap, but do I really need to replace all of them. Also I shouldn't really need to replace the surface mounted ones should I? None of them look remotely bad.

• iMac G5 isight possible bad caps.

Today I picked up a free G5 iMac (whoo free stuff) which had been lying around a friends shop for a while with what he thought was a dodgy psu which he couldn't be arsed paying for.
So I took it home and with some trial and error (mostly error) stripped it down to all parts since it needed a bloody good clean.
The psu looks terrible, but then again it could just be covered in glue, from the big yellow capacitors on the top.

So I ordered one but after poking around the motherboard some bulging caps caught my eye which didn't look to great.
So I googled it,...
