Re: Ouch!!! Gigabyte using FAKE CAPS?!

That's usually why controller boards on external hard drives die - cheap capacitors that get scant airflow if any atop that.
Hmm...maybe I'll get another one later on and recap it. And would you suggest using special 125°C caps???

Well, I've had notebook drives last longer than that and they're much, much lighter.. I'm willing to bet that it's because A) Maxtor drives ran hot and B) Maxtor drives are trash. And yes, heat could be the cause of that board's failure.
To be fair, smaller and thinner drives are obviously expected to be lighter. I do have an old, thicker drive (from a Pentium MMX Toshiba laptop - back then they used OS-CONs ). But 2.1GB isn't much use today and it isn't quiet.

This Maxtor, on the other hand, has no such excuse. The curious thing is I found two unused holes that could have been for a much larger board. I didn't think it got hot. So that leaves B - Maxtor drives are trash. I suppose. With the later "9" series they added five reinforcement ridges extending from the spindle motor to the edges of the drive. Those later drives are heavier than the earlier "8" series (but still not comparable to Barracuda ATA IV/V/7200.7).

Quantum drives underwent a similar change going from the "SE" (2.1GB/platter) to the "EL" (2.5GB/platter). I have a 5.1GB EL by the way, along with a 6.4GB EX (3.4GB/platter) and a 4.3GB CR (4.3GB/platter). I can't stand the racket but otherwise have no problems with them.

Putting a fan over the controller board would help.

Or 7200.8-7200.9 Barracudas which are just as heavy. But I've heard that Maxtor PCBs are mounted in such a way that they run hotter and get less airflow.

OS-CONs are very good - too bad that Gigabyte board had fakes.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

My GA-78LMT-S2 had fake Suncons/Sanyos on them.

What makes you think they're fake?

I don't know Gigabyte as a company that would stoop to using fake capacitors.

                      by DynaxSC
                      Hi,

I discovered a strange behaviour of GIGABYTE GA-H110M-S2 board.

                      General test conditions:
                      - Tested with Core i5 6500 and Core I7 6700K - no difference
                      - Default BIOS settings, but tried also altering several memory setting - does not change anything

                      What is wrong:

With BIOS F1 and F2 the board normally POST's and boots to Windows 11 with 2 x Patriot Viper Steel PVS416G440C9K RAM (4400MHZ, Samsung B-Die chips)

When BIOS upgraded to anything above F2 (ie. F20-F27b) the board POST stucks after 3 Debug Codes on Code C2
                      ...

                      A Dead/DOA Gigabyte GP-P450b 450W ATX PSU
                      by momaka
More eBay specials: this time a Gigabyte GP-P450b 450W ATX PSU for $8 with free S&H. Listed “For part/not working”, as usual. Showed up in a beat up EVGA box without any padding… but that's understandable given the total price. PSU made it out fine without damage. It's a non-modular (yay!), pretty modern-day looking PSU with a black paint and all black cables (meh, not my favorite, but figure it's good to keep a few of these in case I do need one for a more modern PC build, just so my old gray boxes don't look too odd in there.)

And a shot of the label:...
