    Silverstone ST50EF-Plus - Squeal

Hi everybody. I stumbled upon this place while searching for solutions to a "squealing" issue my Silverstone PSU has. It's a little over three years old now and has been loaded 24/7 for much of that time, and recently it has started squealing both while in use and while in standby, albeit at different pitches of squealing depending on whether it's loaded or in standby. After using the search function for an hour or so here I've been leaning toward thinking that the squeal could be emitted from the standby transformer, and that this could be caused by failing standby capacitors.

I've read that the internals of the Silverstone ST50EF-Plus are pretty good ( http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...=Story&reid=13 ), but everything has its breaking point I suppose. My system is still stable under load and I have no issues other than the squealing, but I would like to know if this is able to be remedied by replacing some capacitors or other components on the PSU.

I'm a novice when it comes to understanding of soldering (I've done a few video card voltage mods and that's it) but I'm willing to learn and am looking for advice on how to troubleshoot and fix this. If anybody needs macro shots of the internals of my PSU I can take some and upload them. Thanks in advance!

If it is not under warranty, open carefully the psu case and take some photos of it.

It could be that the caps are going bad. I hate the way Jonnyguru gives a 9.5 to a PSU with cheapo teapo. When I write a review, I always knock 3 points off for not using japanese caps, so that PSU would have been given a 7 if I was reviewing it.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

The lousy caps do perform well initially, it is only when they die do you regret purchasing the PSU. Often times, I have noticed, in reviews, the lousy caps have better ripple suppression than the brand names... In fact there was one review where the guy replaced the cheapo caps with Panasonics and the ripple got worse.

Gabe also does it (hardwaresecrets) unfortunately. If they don't do what they're told, they stop getting review samples.

At JonnyGuru forums, some shill for Delta started a thread about how wonderful their factories were. When I posted a thorough write-up and various pictures indicating to the contrary, the post was deleted.

Also once I chastised one of the videocard makers as scumbags. Everyone laughed at me in the forums. A week later, that company went bust and declared that it would NOT honor the warranties.

        Jonnyguru are scumbags.

Agreed. I once mentioned why I hate Antec and the thread became World War 3 and Jonnyguru thinks I'm a troll.

The Panasonics' ESR was different and the output filter(s) detuned.

The gullible sheep see the 'jonnyGOOFUPS' and their entire world stops- ooh it's an antec, or 'ruststone' in this case. Gotta buy, RIGHT NOW!

Just because it powers a 'puter doesn't mean the rules change...

That squeal can be caused by the 'unimportant' small caps in the PWM controller if all others are changed. I don't get this- when I've got one open, I change them all. 'The small caps aren't important.' Where the HELL did that come from?!

Can't a squeal also come from coils/inductors? Perhaps only under high load though?

Honestly, if you are good with a soldering iron, it's not going to do you much good to get a Silverstone replacement as you are just going to get junk caps...again. So if it's only a few caps, I'd just replace them. Usually those boards are a high enough quality for de/resoldering.

Zombie Samsung UN55NU6900F dead / no standby voltage - randomly came to life after hours of troubleshooting then died
                by tvguy12012012120
This is my first attempt at troubleshooting a board like this, I know I could just buy a new board but I'm curious to figure out how this works. I've been testing different components in the evenings this week and I think the problem is with the IC failing to start up for some reason. When the board is plugged in there is no standby voltage.

Then today it randomly sprung to life like a zombie but shortly died thereafter. I have no idea why it would have done that and its the first time I've seen it running. I discharged capacitors on the board last night, then it was sitting today....

Vizio D50u-D1 Dead Set No Standby
                by fharris1977
Hi. I got a Vizio with no power or standby, and won't turn on with remote or button. I checked the voltages on the connector and all read 0.00V or nearly 0(0.050 ON/OFF pin). None of the pins are labeled STB for standby although I do see some 5V pins. Other than the obvious standby led, which isn't coming on, is there a way to check for standby voltage on this PS. I'm trying to see if my problem is the PS or mainboard. Some Vizios I have fixed with no standby led me to think it was the PS but it turned out being the mainboard. Any experience with this set would be greatly appreciated.

                Hi all.

I started a thread while back regarding TV power supply standby circuitry as it is something I am not quite on top of.
SMPS theory and function is becoming more familiar, however the standby part is still a bit of a mystery.

Anyway, a friend has this TV with the above mentioned power supply board which has no standby voltage, nor any other voltages leaving the board.
The mains AC comes in fine, gets filtered and rectified with power is on the main filter cap as well as the transformer and drain pins of the ICE3B0665J, but that's it.

                Yamaha TSX 120 Standby Problem
                by psssst
Hello forum. I've recently been given a Yamaha TSX 120 DAB radio and ipod dock. Its working well however when put on standby its using 6.3 watts. The manual states less than 1 watt on standby. I measured this with a plug in monitor which seems accurate with other items. In use it uses around 7.5 watts. Firstly has anyone who owns a similar radio also got a plug in monitor to check if this is normal with this unit? In the first half a second the monitor shows 0.3 watts which I suspect is what it should use but something is switching it to be almost fully powered. I've searched the manual for eco...

JSK4228-050 Power Supply Standby voltage changing! (Possible from Wharfedale LTF37K1)
                by reessi
                Hello,

I am trying to re-purpose this power supply that I saved years ago from a tv with a cracked screen for a monitor but that is not really that relevent at the moment. I do not recall which tv but a google search looks like it is from Wharfedale LTF37K1.

You may notice I made some alterations moving some components to the top and some wires which are from a 5v regulator I fitted to the 12v output as the monitor requires 5v. The standby was already at fault from the beginning, it has nothing to do with the alterations...

Years ago it had some bulging caps...
