    dell optiplex gx620 won't boot

    Hello,

    My dell optiplex gx620 won't boot up, but it displays the initial boot screen, so i entered setup and notice that it won't detect the hardrive and cdrom, but it detects the floppy disk.

    There is power in the cdrom, as it opens and closes when i press the buttons. the hard dist also display a small light under it when i open the casing, and it spins up. i also tried another cd rom and hard driev to be sure the original ones are not bad

    I don't know what is wrong, i have tried all settings possible. could this be a bad bios?

    thanks

    Was this working and just stopped or are you trying to build setup this board/system. Because to me it sounds like you are building/setting it up and do not know how to enable the drives/ports in the bios.

        First reset the BIOS.
        Then see if it will boot to the BIOS with all the drives disconnected.

          I have reset the bios by removing the battering, but nothing happens.

          Do i need to flash it ?

          if yes, please give me guide as i don't know where to start

            Re: dell optiplex gx620 won't boot

            Did you have the power supply de-energized [not just system off] when you pulled the battery?
            Need to pull the plug or have switch on back of PSU set to off while the battery is out.
            If not the CMOS is still powered while the battery is out.

            Disconnect the drives from power, not just the data lines.
            That is a checking for a drive that is bad on the power side.

            You also might try disconnecting the front USB ports along with the drives.
            Occasionally a shorted USB port will much things up.
            Also pull any add-in cards you don't need to see the BIOS screen.

            If still can't get to the BIOS screen you know the problem is in what is still connected.
            Namely the mobo or the PSU.

            The following is just a list of places to go from there:

            A corrupt BIOS is one possible problem and flashing it to a fresh copy would fix it if that's it.
            If you want to go that route then dig around in here to find the BIOS and instructions.

            Ask if anything isn't clear.

            The GX620's sometimes have issues with caps including the small 4 & 5 mm caps.
            The small ones can manage to dry out without much if any bloating.
            If you have the 85C small caps that's even more of a possibility.

            You may also have a blown chipset so a -good- visual inspection about not is a good idea. You have to remove chipset heatsinks to do that. Look for cracks, pits, shinny spots or any indication of arcing or melting inside the chip. You can't say it's good if you don't see anything but you can say it's bad if you do.

            ~~~
            Some photos showing what you have for caps would help about now.
