• Re: Car amplifier(Polk Audio PA660) question

I've opened a few of these now that I had marked as defective back when. Also got a few more that were in the batch and overlooked; two PA330s and another 880 and 660.

I've limited myself so far to testing outputs, drivers and smps MOSFETS with a meter. I ordered a quantity of each, as each of the four amps I've looked at so far has a problem with one or more of the above. Until I get some new parts, I'm going to swap some parts around and see how many I can get going that way; then replace the defectives when new parts arrive....

  • Re: Car amplifier(Polk Audio PA660) question

Inventory shows nine PA660 and two PA880. I have a PA330 in my van bridged mono for subwoofer power. It's basically half of a 660, two channels with the same specs as the 660. It's been a very stable and solid amp for two years. I'm thinking about swapping that out for a 660, and the owner wants one of the 880s if I can fix them.

Next step is to set up a test rig and start checking them.

  • Re: Car amplifier(Polk Audio PA660) question

Old thread, I know; but thanks all for the info and encouragement. I just picked a dozen of these...mixed PA660s and PA880s. I worked for a small salvage biz a couple of years ago, testing and reworking various electronic returns from a big-box electronic store. These were left over, and I just happened to run into the owner the other day and asked about them. I've only pulled one 660 apart, and it's got toasted outputs, of course. They got so hot some of the foil traces on the board lifted.

    I'll do inventory (I don't even...

  • Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Looking for a new desk computer couple of months ago...tried all the usual haunts--looked into building something--and finally resorted to intensive pawn shopping. Came upon a Dell Inspiron 660s in a SFF box, almost exactly what I was looking for. It has an i3 3340 running at 3.4 gigs, which when I looked it up, has a higher processor score than many i5's. Aside from that, it included a terrabyte hd and 4 gigs of RAM; plus DVD R/W. Also included: 20" monitor, keyboard and mouse. Manufacture date was 2/14.

    The only sticking point...

HP WJ676A 20" LCD monitor at the thrift store the other day. They had three or four LCD monitors in 16x9. It was between this one and a Dell...each priced the same at $11. I plugged in the Dell, which seemed a much nicer unit only to find it had a cracked screen.

Not expecting much from the ridiculously dirty HP, I plugged it in, got a menu. Paid my money, got it home (feeling like a bandit) and started cleaning. There were a few spots on the bezel and screen that looked like paint transfer scuffs (like it had rubbed against...

  • Re: Ghetto mod thread

Does this qualify? I think so....

Some time ago, my old phone decided to quit charging its battery. The phone itself worked fine...just wouldn't charge. Battery was good, so I hacked up an old phone, and with some gaff tape and a cassette case, made a new charger. In the background of the first pic is the phone that donated its mb to make the charger.

Worked until I got a new phone........

"Here is where to solder the jumper wire I traced it out with a continuity tester. I checked those five other traces radiating from under the IC as well and they had no tie to the torn trace.

This was a very bad trace to tear it's part of the PWMs startup circuit . Run a jumper wire between the two points and the trace is repaired."

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to commend you Krankshaft, for going above and beyond. That was incredibly kind of you.

  • Re: Wireless Router only works 'Wired'

Thank you. This was more a general discussion question than a direct call for help, although I will eventually do as you ask. It seems odd that I keep having the same symptom across a variety of routers. Right now, using a Belkin that has been reliable after a BIOS upgrade.

No reason to have two (the others were scrapped) defective Linksys routers--as well a couple other brands--laying around. Someone could probably use them. Thanks again....

Again, thank you. I will post again when I have the monitor opened and camera set up. I was judging the likelihood of success the 2nd time around. I recall selecting based on ESR, size, temp coef. etc...but not cap brands. Original symptom was much the same as others have experienced.

After recap, eventually it would fail to come out of standby reliably. If the computer was left in a screensave mode (never off), it worked reliably. Eventually, after a power outage, it failed to come on at all. Don't remember the LED states. Will update or start...

I'm sorry. That was a reply to another message on another thread. I don't know how I got it mixed up.

Thank you. I will do that. My question was general, though. Is this a common failure mode?

  • Wireless Router only works 'Wired'

I've been reading the forum and wondered why this was so common, especially with Linksys products, but with others as well. Is this a common failure mode, or is it just me? If it's as common as I've found it to be, is there a common failure point, or are there multiple issues with different routers?

For instance, I've had at least four Linksys routers, obtained from various sources, which failed to connect wirelessly, but which worked fine from the ethernet ports. Is Linksys unreliable, did I get bad ones (probable, considering my usual 'thrift store' acquisition technique), or is...

  • Re: Office Depot Ativa Wireless G Router AWGR54 by Belkin

Kudos! I have one of these disasters which failed to work right out of the box. In fact, I'm going to open a thread about failed wireless routers in general. The failure mode I experience most often is when the wired ports continue to work, but the wifi does not. Remote machines can 'see' the router, but cannot connect. This is common (for me) across many different models of many different brands. I almost always open them up, but not seeing anything obviously amiss, just set them aside. Your post gives me some hope that...

  • Re: Gateway FDP1975W

As I recall, I believe I replaced them all, and was pretty careful in my selection from Newark's stock when I ordered. I could have missed something...or possibly should have also replaced the caps on the video board. I have a couple of things in the repair 'Q' ahead of this one (I only get into fixit mode every so often), but I'll report back when I open it up again.

Thanks for the feedback. This must be one of the most active and responsive repair forums on the web. It gives me some hope that this one (among others) will eventually be out the...

    Gateway FDP1975W

I've noticed a few folks here have successfully recapped these. I wonder if any of you subsequently had more trouble with them. Looking elsewhere on the web, repeat failures seem to be common.

I recapped mine back in June, and it worked fine for several months, then died again. I've yet to go back inside. I hate revisiting old repairs, especially this one, as it turned out to be a pretty mediocre monitor.

Still, I hate throwing anything away, so I'll donate it to my ex-wife's nonprofit if I can make it reliable. So, any experience with repeat failures on these...

  • Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

    Old thread, new member.

I could absolutely fill this entire thread with the things I've scrounged over the years. Unfortunately, I still have many of them. :-)

Still, the best one I found just sitting on the curb last summer; a 42" Dell plasma TV. I opened the door to get the mail and there it was. I hot-footed (literally, it was summer and I was barefoot)it across the street and staggered back home with it. It booted to an OSD, then died again.

There were $35 worth of bulged caps in the ps, which I replaced....

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hi! Jack Dedert, 58 from Nashville. I've been following this forum for years, but had some kind of disconnect with my subscription. That said, I've been using information from here almost since the site was created.

I'm a veteran dumpster-diver, thrift-store/pawn shop/auction addict. I've scoured alleys for usable electronics. I've not always been able to bring them back to life, but I learn from every failure. My favorite thing is to pick up something nobody wants and make it something anybody could use...and...
