Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display
Anyone building Shorty should note that all MCP3421's are not equal, the SMD code dictates the address (which you would change in the code line 45)
If SMD code is
CAxx = 0x68
CBxx = 0x69
CCxx = 0x6A
CDxx = 0x6B
CExx = 0x6C
CFxx = 0x6D
CGxx = 0x6E
CHxx = 0x6F
some of you will have known this,some may not have
I have still have not got it fully working but it is now talking to the MCP3421 @ address 0x69
Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display
That was my first mistake
But this mistake was some how not copying and pasting the full code.
After thinking about it a bit I came to the conclusion Kripton would not have posted code that didn't work, so knew it was my error somewhere.
Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display
Has anybody compiled the source code without errors?
I don't do programming
source code here: http://kripton2035.free.fr/Continuity%20Meters/shorty-with-disa.html
any help greatly appreciated.
I get these errors
/tmp/923549314/shorty/shorty.ino: In function 'void loop()':
/tmp/923549314/shorty/shorty.ino:125:7: error: 'Displaystr' was not declared in this scope
Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display
Just buy one of these it will do the same (similar) job and also checks capacitors for ESR.

My hat comes off to you R_J
All voltages present and correct on the main board connector ST_BY grounded with a 1k resistor. so to recap D854 is a 18volt zener
cheers
Hi R_J
Yes so clumsy, and not thinking any more of it, until you sort of jogged my memory with "If D854 blew like you said it did, there will be a lot more wrong than just that diode"
Unfortunatley pretty sure given the readings (in circuit) it's toast 1.59v +Anode to cathode and 2.1v -anode to cathode.
Sorry I totally missed the values you gave, Thanks.
R965 was confusing me at 5.6k instead of 22k and R966 1k instead of 10k you have an eagle eye.
On opening I would say no, but can't be sure of that.
There is probably a problem with the PFC circuit, but not too worried about that at the moment, more interested with the value of D854
Hi R_J
On reflection, It was not a short explosion. I recall now that when reinstalling the PSU I knocked it against the mainboard, and with a cursory glance thought nothing of it. The diode has no charing or burn marks. I'll try and get a photo up.
Yes I asumed there would be, but if I don't know the value of the component pointless taking it any further. My electronics skills don't go very far i only have NVQ level 2 and 3 in electronics and computing sytems and level 2 in signal pathways. But like to dabble.
Hi
I have a 17PW26-4 PSU from a Toshiba that had the blinking standby led, I replaced the bulging caps and a couple high ESR caps. When turning it on it promptly went pop. I am 100% sure I did not create any shorts. Now what shorted was a smd Zener D854 (litraly blew the top off the die), but this zener has no part number or rating on the schematic. Any of you guys able to let me know the value?
any help much appreciated
Re: New Members - please post your introductions here
Hi all
Been here for years, But never posted. Always found what I was looking for, but not this time
dabbling in electronics, machining stuff and hoarding
