  • Re: Your Best Dumpster Finds

Already tried that, but I can move the motor and the head by hand but it wont spin up and the voltages are present on the conector of the motor.
I've had that problem with an old scsi segate 10gb drive, one lite hit and running, and after some time of storage again the same problem, but another identical drive never had that problem...

Rescued this some days ago, it has some rust, well a lot, and is useless nowadays, does not worth time of cleaning it, and I guess these clones made in Taiwan where common on their days but it is around thirty years old and after a clean it powered on without problems only the hdd is dead, the motor won't start,a 20mb mfm nec 2156 drive, a shame.
And the first MDA monitor I've seen.
sure some forum members have good memories attached to a similar machine, it's a 8088-2.
Well there was a mouse corpse inside the case maybe it eaten...

Some laptop fans can be disambled simply by pulling the blades, so in your case you can remove the screws that hold the metal plate and try to pull the blades gently.
Or maybe it has a circlip behind the sticker but depends on the fan, some can't be disambled so easy.
Be aware of cheap sewing machine oils they are bad, bad bad... like vegetal oil.
That small fan may not work if you use grease because the grease is to heavy and the fan has not enought power be carefull on the amount of grease if you try it.

Whit fans, I'm doing some test with synthetic 2T oil and it is the best solution I've found until now. I've thought of that after used it for repairing an sewing machine made in the 50's.
The bearings have micro pores that get plugged with the greases.
For me a grease is a solution only when the bearings are in very bad shape but the fan becomes slower and in the case of small fans they even can't start.

Mybe this deserves another thread but it seen the problems continue but now in the AMD side but they look biased and not fully reliable.

    I 100% agree with that.
I've bought an IBM model M for 1 euro It does not have the cord but, it smells quality in every corner, even it's weight says something...
But they are not fancy gaming keyboards with leds, so they may not be an option for hannah....

I'm not that old but somehow I'm sure your right and Intel and MS are the pros of security by concealment. I don't know if it's correctly written, my english isn't so good.

The funny thing is that when the somebody buys a laptop without OS they want to install Windows 10 on it because is the latest, like there wasn't any other Os in this world....

Maybe it also depends on they availability on your zone, because I never saw a corsair keyboard, Logitech is the brand around here, and for "gaming" I saw a lot of Gigabyte keyboards, but never saw one failing, and Cherry is the premium brand I saw most.

I never recommend Win 10 to anyone, but new laptops come with it and so people use it, and a lot of customers are angry because of that big updates, but they continue on using Win 10 because they never saw a Linux logo on a new laptop.

Microsoft has they money to promote their OS like Google has the money to promote their web browser, and both of then are pretty aggressive on that, so a lot of people relates the use of the Google search engine with the use of the Chrome browser, most users don't...

The people on the street only sees the marketing and belives that, the "intel inside" and "It's meant to be played", that's what normal people see, and so they ask for intel and nvidia, and so nvidia had the bumpgate and people still buys nvidia thinking they are the best and intel had other big problems and people still buys intel because the think intel is the best, and neither nvidia or intel went into bankrupcy.

The marketing is they key to this, it does not matter if "we",the...

Because they use the word "gaming" in the name they aren't always better quality. I have a lower range Cherry Keyboard for gaming withought leds and it has been working great for seven years and there's no sing of wear on the keys.
I also have mechanical keyboards and they are usually reliable but are more expensive and you have to like the noise they do.
Is a mather of tastes and very dificult to recomend.

Intel lied about the maximum TDP of their cpus multiple times since the Pentium 4 and again with the first gen core i7, I've tested and i7 920 that said 130W TDP and it reached more than 200W with prime95, the heat sink that came with it couldn't hold the heat for five minutes. But here people always said that AMD cpus were hotter because of the famous silly Tom's hardware video that removed the heat sink while computer was running, who is so stupid to do that? well Tom's hardware reviewers were. Sure Intel paid...

I have an M17x r3 running only with the integrated graphics, the 6990m died.
No problems at all because of this.
At the Dell drivers page, if you use the service tag number you can get the original BIOS whitought problems, modded bioses cause problems sometimes, I had some.

The problem is that AMD always play fair even when the first Phenon bug apeared they admited it and fixed it and admited the loss off performance.
But Intel always lies and bends the truth to their own god, and if that's not posible, pais money to anybody who can bend the truth for then, for example youtubers, and reviewers that only care about the money.

Intel whill increase the price of their cpus and new buyers will pay for the lawsuit, like it hapened with the pentium bug un 1994 and with the lies about the Pentium 4 performance.
And like they always do, they won't apologice and they'll say
"This things happens but our cpus are more expensive than the others because they are the best", well as long as the app tha is runing looks for the "Genuine Intel flag".
And don't forget about the Intel 6 series chipset sata problems,...

  • Re: The 2018 Operating System thread

I don't have anything really against any OS, I always try to use the one that better suits my needs in that moment, because of that, I have different computers with different OSs for certain tasks.
My router has pfsense (BSD) installed because it does just what I want from it.
Got tired of W10 on my laptop because of the continuous updates that take much time, and it is not a celeron, is an Alienware with an i7 but every two or three days W10 took 20 minutes of my time to install updates and that is a bigger problem than the fact...

Linux is more troublefree for dailly use, no need to wait two hours to install an update, as long as the hardware is well supported.
Windows 10 is a must for gaming with new hardware, and the other MS OSs depend on the hardware and the use of the cumputer.
For every day work, and multimedia, and server, I prefer linux withought doubt.

A mod that enhances the hardware but keeps all the original functions, is the perfect mod for me. I also have a Toshiba T2130CT that had a 520mb hdd and I've replaced it with a 6gb hdd so something more than the OS itself, but the original hdd is still working and togueder with the system in the case I want to put it like it was before. But to install an 3 1/2" floppy drive in a CPC 6128, you need to mod the case cutting it because it had an 3" drive.

I'm still waiting for a CGA monitor that my boos promised to lend me, but he's...
