They're still talking backlighting, while Samsung already has their LED edge-lit HDTV's out.
What I'm hoping for is the OLED and AMOLED panels under development. Samsung has their I7500 phone out with this technology. IMO that's the future of display technology. I think we'll also see OLED begin to replace lighting in general in the next 10-15 years.

There is a company that makes an LED backlight retrofit kit for certain laptops. I have purchased replacement CCFLs from them a few times. Unfortunately for me, their retrofit doesn't support Toshiba as of now.
May be of some use to someone else though.
