Not with that model, but with a R155. The door opens and closes, but the drive doesn't recognize any disk - CD, CD-R, prerecorded DVD, blank DVD-r, etc. It's apparently a very popular feature with that product.

Just think of all the electricity you save!! None of that boring motor spinning, no funny lights on the screen, and no noisy whir! A Win-Win-Win for all, no?

Ok, I'm not so funny. Didja check the caps in the power supply? Lots of them have low budget caps, and they are left on a lot because they don't make a lot of noise, but just sit there and cook, leading to what would be termed 'short life'. Or it could be more serious as Plainbill notes...

        hi peeps!

i have a faulty LG DVD Recorder RH1777s with me, problem is unable to read disc, just as plainbill mentioned.

        Power Supply Module :-

I checked the voltages to the hdd and dvd-writer, and the recorder has stable 12vdc and 5vdc.

However, I noticed some odd measurements of the voltages to the logic board. those 13.5, 33.5, -28.5va etc. Are these in AC or DC? I measured using a dmm in dc mode, but i am not 100%.

There seems to be a surge when the recorder is on stand-by. I am getting +10% on these voltages. When I toggle the power-on button, the voltages resume to approx. 3% below specs.

I did a thorough visual inspection to the capacitors and they are mostly good(no vents, but bad caps may not vent.), they are from korea/japan. I am doubting a couple right before the output pins to logic board. *ponder*

I did like 50 times of reboot, and play dvd. queer, I managed to run it like 2 times. But it hung midway through a movie, unstable syndrome.

Does anyone has experience in repairing such a model?

I bought 2 LG HDD/DVD recorders (both from kijiji - one driving 35 minutes in a winter storm) and both sellers told me that the DVD drives don't work. Ironically both LGs were made on the same month and year.

I tried cleaning the lens on both, but nothing helps. I did find this one page and have a spare LG DVD drive, but I decided not to swap it out. I just record to HDD and it works great (especially for what I paid).

            Hey, thank you retiredcaps!

Good archive of instructions, but no one is troubleshooting the dvd player's pcb

The dvd writer has a pretty standard profile, IDE interface, 4 pin molex and 3/4 size. I may attempt to swap another drive in.

I need to verified the status of the power supply board, just hope the trouble doesnt starts from there.

Update the thread when I made some progress.

            Cheers!

Components are way too small for me to fix. With people giving away DVD drives for free or $5 or less, it is easier to replace than repair.
