    Problems with color on Samsung HLN5065W Projection TV

    A friend has the samsung HLN5065W projection TV and he is having issues with the color. I am attaching a pic so you can see. I like to tinker so he asked me to take a look. I have never worked on something like this. Although i have worked on several LCD computer monitors. Any help you guys can give would be great. Even if its "Hey the cost is too much to fix" just let me know.

      I work on these type of samsung rear proj. If yours have metal boxes upright in 3 rows, pick the largest of all, pop the top and pull the board out it is socketed, right most is convergence generator board (ignore that), middle is the one you want usually, leftmost is either microprocessor or audio processor sometimes. Check the SMD electrolytic capacitors on this board.

        So you dont think its the color wheel? The reason i ask is someone had suggested the color wheel .......of course they also wanted to sell one as well. It was expensive.......~$90bucks.

            Hey I was thinking CRT, that does NOT apply. :P

            Now we estalished this DLP, done said, I have bad news. DMD board or DMD chip is gone. Pretty spendy for a little chip (around 200) or about that for DMD board as well.

            Is it 2006 vintage and how old is the lamp? If Lamp is recently replaced (few months ago, either buy DMD chip and replace it, I can walk you through this).

            The picture is posterized/solarized with bit of negative look to it is either DMD or DMD chip failed.

                Do not invest. Get a new Samsung 1080p 6 series LCD instead, they are now selling around 800 to 1,000 mark. DLP is very expensive to fix and I'm very hesitant on the either DMD board or DMD chip. Even we were given one and we still don't go ahead till we get express okay from customer for this job.

                Bulb costs more than 150 and can reach over 300 dollars if you don't choose to buy bare bulb. Your will soon will come due on the bulb.

                Your DLP is 1280x720 native chip. Awful way to put on 1080 or 480 video input let alone 720.

                  A 52" LG LCD at the bowling alley has a very similar flaw. Anywhere where there is black in the picture, red snow fills in. Not nearly as bad as this though.

                      You're welcome. You'll appreciate that much. DLP is excellent if know how to deal with it but for a average customer who don't know what to do, this short life of bulb is a deterrent. Difficult to troubleshoot/repair due to multiple boards that is so dependent on each other to troubleshoot by trying one by one, cost goes up fast. Compared to simple LCD that we can easily say this is the problem and suggest a fix.

                      There was a short period where Samsung produced excellent LED-DLP sets where we don't have to worry about cost of HID lamp. Now it is out of picture and all we choose is either LCD or Plasma till OLED come along in few years down the road.

                      Oh yes, there are excellent LCD with LED as light source. Samsung is nice and is coming up with more new LED backlight models in spring around March thru summer. Sony have theirs as well, LG with LH90 series as well. Worth it.

                      Avoid Sharp LCxxLE700UN models. Their video processing doesn't reflect the cost of TV.
