    Solved!

    YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

    The U501 chips showed up today, I ordered two in case I burnt one. Got out the rubber gloves, hair net, and a fresh beer and soldered it on. Pin#6 now reads 12.39 Vdc and on connector P201#3 I now have a 5 Vdc stand-by voltage. I re-connected all the cables and tried it out... works great!

    I'll put some hours on it to be sure I got everything but I think it's whipped. Thanks so much, I'm sure I'll be back again, hopefully with more to offer then just with my hand out.

        Good trick replacing that SMT IC. I don't know if I'd be confident enough to attempt it.
