    Samsung Plasma Melting/Burning

Have a Samsung Plasma hpt5054x/xaa that began to smell like burning/melting plastic. TV still works but is in the group of BadCap samsungs. I have pics of the components in the power board that I believe to be causing the smell (I don't know the names of the parts). Additionally, a few of the capacitors appear to be starting to bulge/leak.

    1) Can anyone tell me the name of the melted parts?
    2) What would have caused it?
    3) Would faulty caps be attributing factors?
    4) Can melted parts be replaced or would it be better to just purchase whole new power board?
    5) Is it possible there is something failing somewhere else that would have caused the melting which would make replacing the power board futile?

    Any opinions are much appreciated!

    Jen

Note: The only problem we have had with this set is that within the last six months or so, it has begun to have a strange flickering.

    DO NOT RUN THAT TV.

You are going to risk more damage by running it like you have with those bad parts. these power supplies (and I have seen it first hand) can catch fire and spark.

You will need to read the printed text UF/v on all of those caps and replace them all, every one of them. Also this power supply has a repair kit on Shopjimmy http://www.shopjimmy.com/samsung-bn4...repair-kit.htm.

If you are not a seasoned solder wand user then this will be pretty hard to do.

Those look like the main filter caps. I'm guessing this set has been heavily used. (Maybe as a computer monitor I suppose?) You should probably start by replacing all those bad capacitors with new ones.

Sounds like the best and all encompassing way to resolve is to replace with brand new power board...Yes?

Depends, if you get a used one then you are going to eventually have failures, you have no idea how long it was used for or how much abuse it had.

There might be some ebay sellers doing repair jobs on this power supply I would go that route so you know that your PS was repaired and has refurbished parts. I stopped working on these as they always seem to fail at the PS level and pretty catastrophically at times too.

Can you get the PN for the power supply? BNXX-XXXXX(letter)

              Wow! What a MELTDOWN...!
It's possible one of the capacitors failed initially unnoticed. This would lead to excessive 120Hz ripple on the output capacitors, which could have damaged the others on the output side. (I've seen this before in computer ATX PSUs.)

Thank you all for your quick responses.

Tom66...I wish I knew what all that meant

Shinju...yes from my research, that is the correct power board model. I will check out the ebay link. I did find a couple of places where I could order one, but I did not think to check if they are used or not. Thank you for mentioning that to me.

My biggest concern and the reason I posted on this forum is that I was afraid that some other "board" could have created the meltdown and in that case I would just junk the set. Is there any other OBVIOUS reason or do you all suspect the components of the power board? I would much rather do this myself rather than call a repair man.

                Thanks again to you all!!

No, it looks like it was entirely contained to the power board.

The TV is a Samsung UN65JU67ODFXZA Version TD01. I replaced the power source board and the TV is now working, but I decided to try and troubleshoot the old board to fix at the component level. Trying to get a schematic and a parts list has proven to be an issue. Trying on my own, I can't tell you how many times my Norton security has flagged sites as "malicious". I ordered a service manual from ServiceManuals.net, paid $16.99 and got 66 pages of everything BUT schematics and component parts list! Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Some of the surface mounted component parts...
