Toshiba 47TL515U -- LG 47LW5300 Frakensteined for Testing

I thought at least some of you here would get a kick out of this.

Had an LG 47LW5300 on hand for some time. Bad control board in it which I knew. PS and T-con assumed good. Bezel was broken on it and well as a dented back, but the screen was in tact.

Yesterday, I get a Toshiba 47TL515U with a severely damaged screen that turns on and plays sound. However, the LEDs were damaged so no picture between that and the screen.

Upon removing the back on the Toshiba, I realize it has the same panel as the LG 47LW5300. I inspected them both closer and see that the ribbons for the LEDs are slightly different. So, I set the panel up on the LG with it's original power supply on the bench. Force on the PS and Backlights and hook that to the LED strips to power the backlight. Then, I put the Toshiba PS and control board on the back of the TV and power that separately. T-con boards were the same for both. Powered up both PS's with a Blu-Ray connected and there you see it playing on the bench. Checked both T-cons so I end up with all boards working except the original LG control board. Most likely discard the TV at this point because of the physical damage but it was fun and I watched a movie while working on some others next to it.

Turned TV right side up for that of course :-)

Oh, and in the one picture you can see the two lower bezels together with the LG and Toshiba logos. I taped the Toshiba to it since I was using it for the buttons and remote sensor.

Back in the day I used to test CRT's like this, often just the loose CRT on a chair with a working set backed on to it on another chair.

If it were me I'd be codging up those ribbons to the LED's, bodging a repair to the case and sticking it on a wall in a spare room/workshop/shed whatever.

I thought about using it. However, it was just so far gone and the Toshiba parts were worth a good deal of money so I went ahead and listed them on Ebay. Considered hanging it on the wall in the shop with the boards attached next to it, rather than on the back for effect.

Regardless, it was fun making it work. I got to admit, I stood behind the door when I plugged it in the first time. You know, just in case.
