    help with digital display.

Hi guys picked up this from the local tip. Was unsure what it was but new it was a display of some sort. Brought it home and wired up a plug. When i first switched on it beeped the displayed the info of the panel as shown in the picture. It then beeps again and starts scrolling " to recieve info etc etc" the connections on it are on the pictures and the 2 cables are a power cable and ethernet cable. Cant see any way of getting into the thing as it looks vandal proof. Anybody any ideas on how i could get this displaying something ?

some type of display terminal obiously.
    over ethernet / serial
    may even have a touchscreen.

search the makers name and model number.

it looks like it may have come from a hospital - "waiting room" i.d.
282days of use and they scrap it - if it was from a hospital it would explain how they burn through so much money every year!!!

        yea - worthless bastards.
it's one of those "i'm more important than god" type company's where discontinued products never happened and datasheets need a formal request.
        fuck them.

        it's probably like this one.
        http://www.infotec.co.uk/product/p3004/

so that lists a bnch of protocols you can search.
or if you open it you will probably find a vga monitor and an embeded pc.

i say get the back off!

probably clipped - shove a smartcard/bankcard between the plastic case sections

Well, you have power in and data in cables.
The label says on the back RS485 which is a serial protocol ... then you have there the connection settings.. 57600 bits per second, 8bit data, 1 stop bit, no flow control etc etc

Get a serial to usb adapter that knows rs485, download teraterm or some other suitable software, connect to the monitor.

You may get a command prompt where you can enter "HELP" or "COMMANDS" or something like that to get info about how to use it, or it may be just input only, meaning it receives a stream of commands and then the monitor displays stuff depending on what you send to it.

                  OR

Open it up, see what it's inside.

Look under labels for screws, if there's no screws then look for seams.. worst case scenario it may be welded shut but I doubt it.

                    try the ethernet,
plug the network in before you power up the terminal and it may use DHCP to get an IP address.

rs485 will either need to be hand-made or cost a lot.
