Samsung PS 42C450 Tuner Low-Gain.

Got me one of these sets--which amazingly actually Works--Gawd, Them Y-SUS in these get bloody hot!

However, there's an issue with DVB (Digital TV Reception) on it.

My signal here at the 'Lab' (living-room) is OK--Not brill, but generally not bad.

Running my trusty old LG 32" LCD one station has near 100% signal, and the others around 50-75%.

The Samsung after a fresh re-tune stores all the usual stations but will not work well with most (The 50-75% signal-level ones),--they appear blocky, stopping and generally completely unwatchable
The 100% signal station however plays near perfectly however.

The Tuner is suspected of being 'low-gain' a condition that was all too familiar years ago, changed many a varicap tuner 35 years ago. ELC1034/05 Philips tuners were always in stock in the day!

I have a replacement Mainboard--the condition of which is unknown--Came outta my 'scrap-pile' in work.....

My issue is, I really don't want to fit this unknown board--just in case it has some fault or other--That will kill an otherwise working set--That would be such a shame.
What is the general consensus,--Can a Mainboard kill say, a perfectly good Y-SUS etc....?

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and just change the tuner!--What you reckon?

A main board cannot kill a y-main or x-main. I never got good signal on these cheap Samsungs.

Cheers Tom, I guess I'll give it a try then--Prob at the mo, is the local transmitter is out due to the weather anyway!

Last time I had low gain in a Samsung it was old caps in the power supply dirtying up the DC. You might try testing them.

A main board cannot kill a y-main or x-main. I never got good signal on these cheap Samsungs.

Samsung made a service bulletin of FW upgrade of mainboard to help repeated failures of X-main, I read in a post of yours yesterday.
So obviously it could kill them ...
Don't know if this is applicable to this specific set though

The firmware update is for the control board, it goes through the main board. Yes technically if you load the old firmware on for a long time I guess you could kill the X-main, but what I meant is instant failure isn't going to be caused by the main board.
