Y-Sustain 4amp fuse type

Hi Guys, Very quick one, my friend has a LG Plasma that has a blown fuse on the Y-Sustain, it is rated at 4A 250V.

Just wondering what is best to buy fast blow glass one of slow blow ceramic fuse?

Time delay (T) type, but I'm pretty sure it will blow again as you will find you have a bad IPM.

I will tell my friend to buy the T type fuses to fix it, sorry what is a IPM?

The module under the large heatsinks on this LG plasma panel. Around £35 to replace, plus buffer boards and powerful >60W soldering iron.

Thank you tom, I had printed out your plasma guide that I found and gave that to him earlier so will wait and see how he gets on and I will let him know about the parts you mentioned just now.

Hi Tom,

You was right, my friend fitted a new fuse and heard something pop down the bottom of the TV. The fuse was intact I seem to recall him saying after he heard the pop. He followed the guide I passed onto him.

Unplugged Y-sustain no picture or sound, green light was on.

Unplugged Z-sustain, sound no picture, green light was on.

Z-sus at fault then you should see faint image if Y-sus OK.

Hi Tom,

Got it wrong! he just went over it again, he had fitted a slightly higher rated fuse than the 4 amp one, he switched it on and he heard a pop like sound from the bottom of the set. I just had a look and we fitted the 4amp fuse as per your spec and switched it on, it went green and then to red. switched it on again PSU clicks on and then it is red, push the button on the front and it goes orange for a short while and then red.

Is it worth repairing do you think?

Worth repairing but you need a good soldering iron to replace the appropriate module. Are Y or Z giving blown fuses?

No blown fuses in Y or Z. We did notice a red/orange light was on, on the main PCB. I have attached a picture of the sets internals.

This is just a 480p set you know? They regularly sell working on eBay at around £60 to £70.

Well it's probably not worth fixing, but you can replace the IPM on the failed board. Best to replace both. Around £50 to £60 to get both. Work it out -- probably not worth it.

OK I guess that makes sense if both are to be replaced. Is there a market for the PCB's? e.g. PSU etc.

Maybe around 5 years ago. You -may- be able to sell them but I wouldn't expect you'd get much. Remote control is probably worth more...

Sorry to flog a dead horse but my friend wants to fix the TV! He has seen very similar models on ebay for £100+ so decided he wants to fix it.

Can I pick your brains again on what to look for and what to test.

Replace the whole Y-sus for the best, most reliable fix. Or replace the IPM, first you need to desolder it which will require a good soldering iron. Once the IPM is removed the part # is found on the bottom. Order new IPM by this part #.

Removing the IPM requires a 60W, temperature regulated soldering iron, or a good desoldering iron+pump combo (with an electric pump.)

Hi Tom, OK I will look out for a Y-sus, just to confirm its the PCB to the left as you look at back of set, if I cant find one where can you buy IPM's from? I have a SMD/Re-flow solder station with a iron upto 500 degrees and hot air station upto 500 degrees. Would that do the job?

eBay sells IPMs, among other places.
You can't use an SMD reflow machine to remove the devices, they are through hole soldered. It is a stupid design really, you need a very very good soldering iron.
