    Samsung LN46A850 LCD - Distorted video comes and goes

    Hello again! It's MY TV this time!

    I just moved, and upon powering on this LCD in my new house, I'm met with random lines of glitched pixels. Entire screen fades to distorted video, then comes back. Unit also powers off an on a few times in succession on its own.

    Since this is an LCD, I'm thinking the power supply cant keep voltages within spec. Opened the unit, took pics of PSU. No bulged caps, but did notice that most of the smaller caps were "Sam Young" brand.

    Shopjimmy.com has this board for $50, I'm going to check and see how much a cap replacement kit is. Do you guys agree with my diagnosis?

      I would not suspect the power supply. Samyoung while not the best brand rarely fails. I would definitely check the voltage outputs from the power supply with a multimeter before buying the power supply.

      If lines are appearing on the screen Id check that the ribbon cables are securely connected between the tcon and the panel, and after that assume its either a bad tcon or panel defect. I would tend to believe loose cable or panel defect if it happened right after you moved it.
      Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

          Must have been loose cable.. I unplugged the power supply to clean the dust off and take pics, also cleaned the fans while I was in there. Plugged everything back in and powered on, no more bad image. Thanks.!

            I guess I spoke too soon. Tv exhibiting the same symptoms.

            Upon power up, I have no issues, but within about 5 mins, random horizontal lines of distortion pop up. The lines extend all the way across the panel, and only appear for an instant. As more time passes, the lines pop up more often, and in greater numbers.

            I took a video with my phone of the point it gets to right before the tv turns off and back on.

            After the unit powers back up, all is normal for a short while again, but reappears quicker this time.

            Any suggestions are appreciated in diagnosis.

            Ps. This tv also possibly has a faulty 120hz motion control, not sure if the two issues are related.

              Get your heat gun/freeze spray out and start working over some components to see if you can make the symptoms appear/disappear at will. Mainboard failing ?

                    If I heated up the T-Con board, I found that the screen turned NASTY. While removing the T-Con, I noticed that the LVDS cable did not want to come loose after the retention clips were pressed in.

                    I removed the shield from the T-Con, and re-assembled. This time no problems when heating T-Con board, I wiggled the LVDS cable and got some random horizontal lines.

                    I think it is/was simply a loose LVDS cable. Testing now.
