    Phillips 42PFL5432D/37

Saw quite a few threads on this TV but not this particular problem. It powers up and the menu comes up very briefly but then immediately fades away. The backlight stays on indefinitely after this happens. It will do this only a couple times before no image shows at all and then it has to cool off for 5-10 minutes to even get that far again. I have attached a video of the problem. The image looks perfect for the second that it shows.

Capacitors on the power supply all appear to be good

Thanks as always for any advice.

Pictures of the board layout but I'm sure someone else has them on here already.

Remove each of the white ribbon cables going to the panel from the T-Con board in turn, then power up the tv. Of course only half the screen will work!

Does it still have the fault? With which ribbon cable removed?

Seems odd both sides go out so worth changing the T-con first!

Also, strangely enough I recently replaced that exact same board in a TV (Toshiba 42X3031D) just a few days ago with the same fault, as per video, darkness sweeps across the screen but with backlight still on.

I'll go give this a shot and report back in a few minutes.

            Sure thing!

Press 'Menu' button on front/side panel or on remote to be sure there is definately no image shown unless you have an input connected and selected when the tv first comes on.

Ok. I can take a picture if needed but what I have with the left side is unplugged (looking from the back), is a solid white 1/2 screen and the other side goes from a bunch of vertical lines to a white screen and back. If I change inputs or hit the menu I can see the screen respond by the lines shifting left and right.

If I unplug the right side only, nothing lights up at all other than the backlight. Regardless I get no picture or menu at all doing either.

Oh, and I never had anything connected in the first place. Was just getting the menu by pressing the button or changing the input source. I am almost positive its not a screen issue. Guess I could check for sound with the DVD player.

Personally I would say replace T-con.

How much can you get one for, where are you? in the US!

Yes sir. Southeast Georgia. I found one already for $19.91. This would be the 1st bad T-con I've had out of 20 or so repairs. Hard to go wrong with a $50 TV and $20 for that. I'll report back when it arrives.

Oh, and thanks for the help!

                      $18. Sweet. Even better!

                          No problem.

I think replacing the T-con first will save a lot of time troubleshooting and for the sake of $15 and free shipping, see above, it will be worth it.

Of course if you have an oscilloscope you could confirm the T-con is faulty with test patterns.

Glad to be able to help, hope all is well where you are.

Wow, that was fast, actually a bargain at that price. I actually paid £6 for mine including postage which was a deal especially as it fixed the TV and saved me hours of troubleshooting.

Yes sir. Always! I've made sure to do that on every one I've posted about. Should have by Friday at the latest pending the guy's shipping speed.

No scope here but that would be a good Christmas Idea. :-) I'd like to start with just a better multi meter than my 'pocket pro' from Home Depot.

                                lol

Glad to hear its fixed and nice to hear back from you!

Also pleased that I could offer some assistance its not often much.

Keep that T-con, it may come in handy one day, I know its not 100% working but you know the symptoms with this one so may do for troubleshooting in future or even possibly for spare components providing you check them first!

Looking forward to hearing how soon and how much you sell it for, I'm sure you'll be just dying to tell someone.

Heres hoping your next project is as simple and cheap to repair.

                                        Best wishes!
