VW42L HDTV10A Video flickers, speakers pop

I just read a thread where another member was experiencing problems with his VW42L HDTV10A as well. I have a multimeter, but don't know how to test them. From what I read the capacitors that need to be replaced read "v9a PET". Apparently these are low ESR and can't be purchased at RadioShack. All four look slightly bulged. There are a bunch more under a heat sink, but all look to be in good physical condition. Is this sufficient to test capacotors:

Also how do I know what the ratings are for them?

You cannot test capacitors with a DMM, even if they have a capacitance mode. You need an ESR meter, which ranges between $50 and $300. Obviously not practical for a one time repair, but I have to say 95% of the bad caps I have seen bulge. How aboutsa picture of them?

That V9A PET doesn't tell you anything. V9A is an internal code of the manufacturer and PET simply says the plastic on the capacitor is a plastic type called PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) - for some uses PET plastic is not allowed and other plastics are used for labeling capacitors.

If the capacitors look like the ones in your last pictures you have to replace them.

The actual values are written on the other side of the capacitor. There's a hole in the board on the other side so if you unscrew the board and take it out you should be able to read the values.

But eventually you would have to remove the capacitors to put others in place. The capacitors are glued to the board with that white gunk, you can use a screwdriver or sharp knife to CAREFULLY scrape that gunk away and detach the capacitor from the board and bend it up by the leads to read the values.

It should say something like ### uF ##V 85c or 105c ... for example 820uF 35v 105c

You should keep the same capacitance value, and the same voltage rating. Higher voltage rating is OK to use but keep in mind a capacitor with bigger voltage rating can be bigger.

Don't buy from Radioshack, the only "low esr" about those capacitors is the text on the label. Well, they're OK capacitors but not designed to be used inside monitors where there's a lot of heat.

Use Digikey.com or Newark.com or Mouser.com , these are very good online stores for good parts.

Look for Panasonic FM or Panasonic FR capacitors with the values you need.

I'd like to order from Mouser, but I didn't get any farther than the voltage rating. I'm lost with all the fault tolerance. Can you tell by the picture what else is needed?

That's a Samwha LT , 470uF 35v capacitor.

You can get 470uF 35v or 470uF 50v capacitors, either one will work fine.

Measure those old capacitors with a ruler or something or measure the hole to make sure the capacitors you get can fit in there, then pick whatever fits from the links above (or whatever is cheaper), all above should work great as replacements.
