Samsung PN58A650 - Powers on and displays video, then picture distorts and turns off

    Samsung PN58A650T1F Plasma

Troubleshooting this set for a friend.

With no sources connected, TV powers up, displays the black screen with the "HDMI 4 - No Connection" boxes. Set will display this screen indefinately without issue.

Plug in an input source - in this case, all we had was an HDMI device.
It seems the warmer the set gets, the more quickly it has the problem.
When a device is plugged in, (HDMI4, the set was already selected to that input) a couple seconds pass and the TV detects a signal on the input, I hear a few clicks, and the set starts playing the source.

After a couple more seconds, the image turns to a giant blur, displays the blur for about 5 seconds, then the set turns off and back on. Issue repeats.

I've taken the back off of the set, and with the set on, (going through it's video display/then blur/then off) pressed and flexed on the PSU board, the TCON, and the logic board. No difference at all.

I then removed the logic board, found what appeared to be a small amount of residue from soda on the solder side. Cleaned all that, reinstalled, issue remains.

It does appear that the issue has something to do with heat, however, I don't think it's a cold joint. Since it's affecting the whole panel, I don't think it's the Zsus or Ysus, IMO it should be the PSU, the TCON, or the logic. Is there a way to test each?

Also - not sure if I'm interpreting this correctly, when the set turns off, the red power light blinks 5 times until the set displays a picture again.

Can you try with a DIM source e.g. a dark scene and see if it will play indefinitely, and then see if as the brightness increases the picture distorts.

Bad news is the TV won't stay on long enough to switch sources. I've tried disconnecting all cables from the power supply, and jumping PS_ON to ground with a 100 ohm resistor, but all I get is a "click" from the power supply when connected, and another click when disconnected.

Check the power supply for cold joints. Freeze spraying stuff may help, too.

Okay, will pull the PSU. On Samsungs, am I correct in trying to power the PSU up by shorting PS_ON to ground? If only the PSU and logic board are connected the PSU still does the power cycle thing.

You can tell by measuring the voltage as it clicks and monitoring what state it is in, otherwise, try both ways.

Plugged in control board & logic board to the PSU, with the LVDS cable attached from the control to the logic board. PSU powers up, and I get (close) to the indicated voltages on each output (Only Xmain and Ymain left to plug in.)

I would like to adjust, however I don't see any lableled places to adjust Va and Vs

                  Look closer.

I tried adjusting those, they didn't change the value of Va and Vs at all, so I put them back where they were. I flexed the PSU while it was out, and after reinstalling and plugging everything, the set is now functioning normally. Even an hour later. I'm guessing a cold solder joint in the PSU.

They're definitely part of the feedback network, perhaps the fault was preventing the Va and Vs from going any higher?
