Hello Members, I am New to the Badcaps Family and possibly a future active member. I am currently working on a Sony Wega 50" rear projection tv and I have done major research and troubleshooting on this device as well as even looked up the Sony TV code system. there is only 2 things that could be wrong at this point. Now I am more interested in repairing the ballast if it needs repairing since I work in a shop That has the proper equipment to do such work I work on circuit boards on a regular basis. But This is a bit different. according to my research the reason for this issue Is either a Bad lamp, or a color wheel that is losing lubrication on the ballast that lights the lamp. It is more cost effective to just replace the color wheel. But I need to know if this is actually possible or should I just replace the ballast?

You haven't mentioned the issue with the TV. What are the fault's symptoms? Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
The when the TV is powered on you get no picture and immediately the power Led blinks continuously and then you get the buzzing from the ballast attempting to light the lamp. I have removed the back cover and can even see a purple charge jumping across the ballast on the inside.Comment

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
From my limited knowledge of DLP/LCD rear-projection sets, the arcing across the ballast is normal - its job is to provide a high voltage pulse to the bulb to get an initial arc going, then pass the low voltage DC (around 20-50V at several amps) to the bulb.
If you are getting an arc, I think the ballast is fine, but the bulb may be dead. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

If you don't mind looking at this link that I have here that helped me get to this point. it explains what the led blinks mean on the front. I really appreciate your assistance with this, but I just want to be sure that I am reading this correctly.Comment

Those look like CRT error codes. Is your set a CRT rear-projection or LCD/LCoS/DLP?Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

In which case they aren't applicable to your problem.
I am just finding the service manual now for you and will upload it shortly. That should have complete error codes. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Here's the manual uploaded on my service manual site:
The blink codes are on the 7th page. Which fault is your TV indicating? Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
well the closest I am getting to the codes on this service manual is (ATSC-OVP error 10 times
-No "DTL MODULE 5V " output
(G1 board, G2 board)
- No picture/No sound)
But The LED blinks continuously without delay or pause. I have counted the blinks on the power led & its continuous until it goes back into standby.Comment

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
That isn't specified in the manual so I'm lost completely. It's not the lamp LED blinking, but the standby LED?Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
I wish I could help. Is the LED blink approx 0.3 seconds apart? Maybe it's the set repeatedly trying to power up and failing instead, which could cause a blinking LED, I suppose. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
It seems really strange that Sony would not specify a continuous blinking LED error code. I do not know what the error code means and cannot offer much help as I have never repaired rear-projection sets (except one CRT rear projection, but they are almost completely different.)Please do not PM me with questions! Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
Dont worry, You have been More than helpful & have given me a direction to move in. at least I know that the loose charge I am seeing on the Ballast Is Normal. LOL I am going to have a look at the G1 and G2 boards to see if i see any visual issues.Comment

Re: Sony Wega TV kdf 42e655 possible Ballast Issue.
What you can do is check if there is a 20-50V supply going to the bulb. Don't test across the bulb as it gets a 5000V or so spike, but test before the ballast. I suspect it may simply be your bulb being bad, but for some reason it's detecting it as a different fault. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. by eclectricHi, I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue before I give up on this TV.
In short, I replaced the T-CON board due to an error code indicating that was the problem, after which it flashed a green and orange LED meaning software update required. I cannot get the tv to do the required update via USB, so I am stuck.
Here is a rundown of the symptoms and the steps I have taken to troubleshoot:
I inherited the TV with the symptom that it would turn on, then turn off after 5-10 seconds and a red LED flashed 4 or 5 times. Sometimes it would be 4, sometimes... -
by AkuankaHi everyone,
I'm troubleshooting a power supply issue with a Sony SLV-E780 VCR. The device clicks repeatedly but doesn't power up completely. I've already replaced five capacitors, but the problem persists.
Here's a video link https://photos.app.goo.gl/3Xki6yvCLn67gLX78 showcasing the sound. Based on your experience, could this be due to a transformer, diode, or another component? Any guidance on what to test or replace next would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help! -
by GraphicManThe monitor is old yes but occasionally used (perhaps about 1 ~2 hours usage per day on average)
one time i turned the pc on and noticed this issue
what could it be?
nothing wrong is seen when it is off, also the issue is not there on a green screen!
when watching movies it is hard to detect unless in black screen/large shadows
please check the images, thanks...04-14-2024, 10:06 AM -
by CyberPhoenixHello, Last week I bought the 50" Sony X80j tv everything was working fine, untill I plugged the tv in a ups power supply 650va the tv remote control became unresponsive and the TV became laggy after a while the picture quality isn't the same as before the tv seems less brighter and the picture is somehow blurry, people's faces don't look as natural as before, there is a mini orange-pink tint to the edge of people's faces especially in NETFLIX Dolby Vision like in One Piece ep1 Alvida skin tone, my intention was to protect the tv but something went wrong I checked the ups with a multimeter,...

by thelankanguyThe TV shows a black screen with no image.
TCON ribbon connectors were disconnected individually for image and there was no half image even.
Later both ribbons were disconnected and TCON voltages were tested.
12V, 3.3V, 1.8V were seen present but VONE signal reads 0V.
There is also a short to ground in this circled inductor.
Is this a TCON issue or something else ?... - Loading...
