    Lady has a Toshiba 40E210U

    Problems:

The picture lights up for a very short time when turned on,
but you can only see "shadows" of the picture, and then
    it turns off.

The sound remains on, and works fine.

She claims her son threw a bottle at the TV, but
incredibly, the screen was not cracked, or at least she
    believes it isn't cracked.

I'm tempted to offer her $5-10, because I'm taking a
real chance that the screen isn't cracked.

The inverter might still work, if the screen lights up
momentarily, but perhaps the +24V from the power
supply doesn't stay on? Or perhaps this is a
    problem with the main board?

Wouldn't bother; probably got bad tab bonds, or multiple damaged CCFLs - simply not economical to repair.

      Thanks for the feedback, Tom.

Can you explain in more detail what the indications
of the bad tab bonds are? These are the flexible
interconnects to the LCD screen, that people sometimes
have to put pressure on to make work correctly,
      right?

Is it the fact that she has "shadows" on the picture? Because
the whole screen does turn on, but only for a short while.

The ccfls were possibly broken when the tv was hit with something that may have not hurt the panel but affected the ccfls. That would explain the inverter shutting off.

I would not touch this tv unless it were free and I agree with tom66.

I have never liked any toshiba flat screen tvs (at least the ones I have encountered)

Ok, so the red flag for busted CCFLs, is the picture does
come on, but only for a short while, and then the inverter
turns off automatically, in response to perhaps too much
          current draw.

Correct? I just want to be able to identify this myself next time.....

Too little current draw. One or more tubes are bust. The shadowing is probably caused by insufficient lighting from the TV. The panel may be okay. $5 might be worth it for the boards, if you think the PSU, main, t-con and inverter are worth it, plus the fuel/time to pick it up.

I see. So the "shadowing" she described would accurately
reflect some of the CCFLs not turning on, or being busted.

And the inverter turns off due to insufficient current draw.

I think I'll pass on this one.......thanks much, fellas.......
