    PVR tuner problem

    Hello,

A three year old Humax HDPVR-1000C has lately developed a problem of picture artefacts typical for bad/weak signal and it looks like there is something wrong with the tuners.

Signal strenght as shown by the pvr's internal diagnostic deteriorates in negative correlation with temperature rise: 10C equals roughly 10% drop in signal strenght.

Using a fan to cool down the tuner board (which houses the the twin tuner module) I noticed that the signal strenght recovered almost to the level it was just after turning on the pvr. There are five electrolytic capacitors on the tuner board, could they cause this? They seem to be ok by visual inspection, though.

I have very little experience troubleshooting electronics and I would greatly appreciate if some one could give an estimation of what is the problem here.

    Welcome, elco!
Are any of the electrolytic capacitors (small cans) bulging?
Also, do you have a good picture of the following boards: power supply, tuner and main logic?
    This would be helpful.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.
